According to a Newsweek article, the McCains have not paid their property taxes on their condo in CA for the last 4 years.  On July 1st the property will go into foreclosure.

When the story broke on Friday, the McCains paid part of the taxes on Sunday but still owe over $1600.

I could understand being late, but not paying anything for 4 years.  I wonder if my city would allow me to pay my property taxes every 4 years.  AND when they did pay the taxes there where no penatlies????  NONE

Dam if I send in my property tax 1 day late there is an added fee.

I wonder how they will spin this?

Like this?

NEWSWEEK raised questions about an overdue property-tax bill on a La Jolla, Calif., property owned by a trust that she oversees. Mrs. McCain is a beer heiress with an estimated $100 million fortune and, along with her husband, she owns at least seven properties, including condos in California and Arizona.
San Diego County officials, it turns out, have been sending out tax notices on the La Jolla property, an oceanfront condo, for four years without receiving a response. County records show the bills, which were mailed to a Phoenix address associated with Mrs. McCain's trust, were returned by the post office. According to a McCain campaign aide, who requested anonymity when discussing a private matter, an elderly aunt of Mrs. McCain's lives in the condo, and the bank that manages the trust has not been receiving tax bills on the property.

The explanation is a little too trite. The trust certainly has a manager who is responsible for disbursing payment for this sort of thing. It seems likely that he certainly has a responsibility to make sure that all taxes the trust is responsible for are paid. Not getting a bill for a couple of years is not reason to ignore the matter but instead reason to find out what is wrong.

Although it is likely that neither Cindy nor Senator McCain had anything personally to do with the matter.

I agree with DomKen (God did the earth just go off its axis!) in that the manager of the trust was lax in his duties. Classic example of "if you want something done right you have to do it yourself") Banks are far from infallable. I once got an inquiry from one of those "bail out / distressed property" buyers regarding a "notice of tax sale" on a piece of property I owned in Western New York and the property taxes and insurance were included in the mortgage! It turned out that thanks to some idiot at HSBC for three years the place was uninsured and in arrears on property taxes while I faithfully paid my mortgage by automatic debit every month! Did my lawyer ever rip out some rectums on that one, because the accumualated interest and penalties were over $15,000...

Im sure the McCins dont even know about it... thats why they hire people who are supposedly competent. I bet the bank will be pretty pissed at the schmuck who embarassed a 100,000,000 account and a sitting senator. I know heads rolled over my situation and I wasnt even CLOSE to the McCain league.

When are poeple going to demand that the ISSUES be discussed and not something about a persons minister or property tax. If anyone in this country thinks that a US senator is treated like Joe everyday, wake up and smell the coffee burning!!

You appear to go "to the park" a lot.

But never seem to go.

To his credit, that`s what Mr.Obama has been doing.

This is one of his appeals and separates him from most other candidates.

He handled Clark`s comments with class and made it clear he wouldn`t go there and won`t stand for it done to him as well.

You won`t see a peep from him on this silliness.

I agree it is a non-issue.

An issue is a county worker, gaining tax exempt status on a house she said she would tear down.  and 8 years later- the house still stood.  meaning that she got a free ride for 8 years....
[it happened here]

tax sales are a complicated topic. I was into that for a while, and luckily I never bought what turned out to be a retention pond, [where owner must cut grass, and can never build] , a swamp, a landlocked moutain cliff, and a road.  LOL.

Sure I do, just got back. Finished most of the left horn for the post I am carving my niece. Even had a chance to stop and say hi to my dad. He's doing good, but was ranting about Obama. Something about him saying high gas prices are good. I know I shouldn't admit this, but I really didn't pay a lot of attention to it. After all, the man does have a picture of Bush in his dining room. Hope your having a good day also.

Edited because I didn't proof it before hitting ok

I know a guy,who lives in a foundation!,...just to avoid paying taxes on a real home.

It`s placed into a hill so that one side has a door and a window above ground, but that`s it!

The roof is flat(the actual 1st floor of the would-be house) and featureless accept for a stove pipe.

And he can`t seem to get why it is that he`s been single for 20 years.
