-fast reply, haven't read the entire thread-

i'm kind of lost as to why everyone's SO happy starbucks is closing. if you don't want to pay $5 for a cup of coffee, don't! last i checked, starbucks isn't putting a gun to your head.

personally, i go there because it's a relaxing atmosphere to knit, listen to lectures, and study. unfortunately the closest independent coffee shop is 2-3 miles walk from me and off the bus route. for all that starbucks is called snobbish, i've got to say my experience with local coffee shops here is that they tend to be the snobs - and their food and drinks are WAY more expensive and often don't taste as good. i still support locally owned businesses whenever i can, but until one of them opens up a shop closer to my university, i go to starbucks, because i don't always have the energy to make a special trip, particularly in this heat.

i don't drink coffee - i'm a tea person myself, so i usually order that or the frufru drinks. but i also don't blame starbucks for "taking my money" - hell, i am the one who voluntary walks five minutes to get there and voluntarily hands over the cash. i've tried to cut down, partly because i mostly enjoy hot drinks and i can't stand them in florida this time of year, partly because of money, and partly just trying to go only when i have gift cards (my master is nice). but sometimes i get sick of spending hours on end studying/knitting in my apartment/His house/the library, and i just need a change of scenery - which means starbucks or the shisha bar, and starbucks is the less expensive of the two.

eta: the minute tim horton's opens up shop in florida, i am so there instead of at starbucks.

the cheapest hookah is still $10 ;)...without adding drinks or anything else to the tab. or, you know, one of the cool hookahs. i'm partial to the ones with apple juice filters myself, but those are for when i'm NOT struggling to pay the rent, LOL. master's got a hookah from His time in iraq, but it's missing a few parts...and i'm more partial to the atmosphere there than anything else, to be honest.
