I made a flogger completely out of rope. A little over 3 years later (but hardly any play), it's coming apart at the handle. It has no core, just rope wrapped around more rope. I got the instructions for it somewhere on the vast interwebs, and it's been a good flogger except that the top part where the hanging circle is has gradually started to come apart. The rope itself is fine. I was wondering if there is a way to fix this. The "handle" is rather floppy, also, and I'd like to give it a core and/or stiffen it some, too, if possible. Is there anything that can be done, or should I make another one with a core? If I end up making another one, what should I use as weight for the back of the handle?

If you used a small metal ring for your hanger, you can pull a rubber grip (think bicycle handlebar grip) over the handle by tying a string to the metal ring, fishing it up thru the rubber grip, and pulling it through.  If you used a large metal ring, I'm thinking you could try tying a string through the same path of the metal ring, then cutting off the ring with boltcutters, fishing the string up through the handle, then perhaps lashing on a new metal ring with some strong twine and an upholstery needle (the kind of needle shaped into a half-circle).

That's all I've got off the top of my head.

Since the flogger is made entirely out of rope, you could re-tie it.  At this time when I'm making a rope flogger, I'm using a separate handle of wood.  You could insert something inside to make the core, but it would have to be something non-abrasive because of the movements the rope would go through when in use could eventually damage the rope.  If I have you correctly, there's falls gathered with a loop, and then a handle made from another separate rope tied around the gathered falls near the loop.  The handle may have loosened up some or the falls may have slipped some.  In either case, that sounds like undoing the handle tie, and re-tieing the handle back to be like you had it before.  A suggestion would be to use shrink rubber tubing and heat treat this to make the handle stay like it is.  Another way would  be to head on to the hardware store and get some tool dip to dip the handle into it to seal it with a latex coating that will lock in the knots.  Good luck with it in any case...
