I abhore fingernails, so I keep them verys hort, so short that sometimes very little white shows. And in the past when I've painted my nails or had them professionally done, I've come away thinking it just makes my nails and fingers look stubby and unattractive because the nail polish draws attention to just how short the nails are.

Any one else felt the same way?

Well, yes, but only if your nails are chewed up and icky looking, then it draws attention to them.  I think a nice pearly color, a sheer, or a natural tone looks nice.

I think short finger nails make fingers look stubby. Nail polish probably highlights this fact as you said but I’ve not really given it much thought in truth.

Nope, not  chewed and icky looking, I keep them that short with the help of nail clippers.

And yup in the past I've used clears or very light colors and it does give them a very nice sheen with out the look of stubbyness.

Oh it definitely does.
Long finger nails just make your hands look gorgeous, in my opinion.

I'm desperately trying to stop biting my nails because I used to really enjoy painting them ice-blue.

puppen Daddy bites his finger nails an I don't like it cause when he scratches my back the ragged edges of his nails are not pleasant on my skin. That and when you bite them you tend to have to bite more to try an get rid of the ragged edges that are still bugging you.

Yes, it does; there's little point of polish on short nails, as it's...not as nice, I suppose. :) It might be more noticeable on short fingers, though; I'm sure it looks better on longer fingers than mine!

I used to chew on my fingernails a lot...nothing quite like the taste of fingernails to garnish a good book. LOL. I don't really do so any more, as I'm now quite fascinated by long fingernails. One problem with long nails is that they're more likely to break, for one thing, and make some actions really interesting: like typing, or any type of cooking that requires hands-on stuff. Oh well.

They do say "Beauty is pain"! :D

writerly, myy dad says  when they first got married, my mom used to have such long nails they impeeded her ability to do things like turn the knobs on the stove.

I used to love long nails and mine were not prone to breakage or weakness very much, and in fact long nails saved my fingers when I slipped and grinded a nail down to the skin in wood shop on a belt sander. My teacher says that would of been a pretty bad injury if I hadn't of had longish nails. But somehow along the way I just became annoyed by nails and took to cutting them  as short as I could with out pain.

just let your nails grow a tiny bit then polish them. You will be amazed at how they can elongate the fingers...

*you made me cringe..*

Perhaps the best thing you can do is to just buff them to a light shine. They will look neat but not draw attention to your hands..

holly yes, perhaps that's what I'll stick too. Or a nice coat of clear coat, cause it gives you a little boost of having done something nice to yourself and doesn't look odd.

If you are using a dark color then try a light shade, it won't look as out of place on short nails.

I play guitar so I often cut my nails shorter so that I can play more easily.  I have long thin fingers to start.  Buffing the nails can make them look polished and keep them healthier.  Sometimes I'll still put on a darker color for a day or two but have found that for shorter nails either buffing or light pearlescent colors are generally the best.

Good cuticle care can make nails look longer.  Honestly, I no longer tend to notice people's fingernails much unless they are having difficulty doing their jobs because of long fake nails or because of chipped polish (something that makes me cringe).

all this talk about nails made me think of something and why i don't wear polish at work. i am nurse and during nursing school we were inspected weekly. uniforms, shoes, and nails. one of my nursing instructors was a retired captain in the Navy...she did inspections as if she was still in the military..strict so friggin strict! on these inspections more than once a girl was sent home for not passing inspection of her nails.

most of the bitching was about not being able to wear polish until our instructor passed around an article attributing bacteria trapped in the nail polish to the death of a preemie in a neonatal unit (i believe in Co.).there was no more bitching in our class after that.

i love wearing polish and the french is the only one i get anymore. in my job, i am required to do stuff all the time that can go bad for the patient....not wearing nail polish is the very least i can do to assure the patients that i assist are safe in my care.

may we all find our bliss in a french manicure.

I'd love to have a French Manicure and my nails done. I used to have the acrylic overlays on my nails but got rid of them years ago. Now, I don't know if I could handle it again, I enjoy my short nails and not having to worry about them.

OP, I'd go clear or very sheer or neutral if you want to wear polish. The darker colours accent and emphasize the length of your nails.
