How long should you do it for? I'm kind of afraid the edge of the pot will make it melt, so I'm standing over it poking it with a spoon. Hopefully my roommate stays gone for a bit

I've never had any problems that way, and I've boiled mine for 15-20 minutes.  As long as there is enough water to keep them clear of the bottom of the pot, you should be good.  The bottom of the pot will definitely be hotter than the water, but the sides will be cooler than the bottom.

~Fast Reply~

Word to the wise: Be absolutely sure they're silicone! Not saying that I've ever melted a non-silicone dildo by mistake and had to fish the goo out of the water with a kitchen utensil or anything....

To answer though... no problems at all with silicone toys. They are safe to boil and the sides of whatever you use won't hurt them.

Why am I having visions of exploding jelly butt plugs after reading this?

The purpose of boiling a toy would be to sanitize and perhaps remove some sticky stuff...

Sanitation at 212F happens in something like 7 seconds.  As said, silicone is heat resistant - companies make silicone baking items.

Lynnxz.... put down the bottle - crawl out of the tub. 10 minutes is more than enough. your insertables are also dishwasher safe.

One's intrigued to know how big your pot is  [;)].

(And I do it only 2 or 3 minutes of bubbly boiling).

christine1 -> RE: When you boil Silicon sex toys... (7/7/2008 2:49:29 PM)

geesh, i only wash mine in a big sinkful of sudsy, hot water.....does boiling make that much of a difference?

moose -> RE: When you boil Silicon sex toys... (7/7/2008 2:55:51 PM)

~fast reply~ I boil my surgical grade silicon menstrual cup for five minutes.... or until the burning smell fills the flat (usually the latter) and it hasn't melted yet. That said, I put my waterproof rabbit into a bleach solution (maybe slightly too deep...) and the seal failed. I'd say check what it's made of. If you're unsure, just use sterilising solution as it doesn't require any kind of temperature.

welikespice -> RE: When you boil Silicon sex toys... (7/7/2008 5:20:34 PM)

While boiling is ok better then none
The preferred is pressure cooked which is more like a true sterilizer

kiwisub12 -> RE: When you boil Silicon sex toys... (7/7/2008 5:58:15 PM)

washing with soap and water has worked well for me -no infections yet. I wouldn't worry about boiling unless you are going to use them on multiple partners, then 5 minutes should be ample. [:)]

I'm not saying I set out to boil them for ages; I'm just easily distracted.[:D]

As another poster mentioned, a pressure cooker would be better than boiling.  It would be closer to autoclaving, though pressure cookers may not reach autoclave temperatures.  There are used for sterilizing food though, so I'm guessing the difference might be insignificant.  A 100 kPa (15 psi) pressure cooker gets to 125C (257F).

I'd think that washing vigorously in hot soapy water followed by boiling (15-20 minutes NOT required) would suffice in most cases.

Another option, though I can't vouch for it, might be baking them in the oven, though it can take 2 hours at 160C in the oven vs 3 minutes in a 134C autoclave.

For insertables, using a condom is a very good idea.

As said by someone else, what is the intent for cleanliness?

Is this a toy you found in a dumpster?  Are you lending it to a friend... heh.. regifting?  Are you washing it for the first time?  Are you doing a maintenance washing?

I have My Pet mouth clean her toys when she's down with them for the day, keep them cool and dry, and occasionally use a toy cleaner from any sex shop.  This only applies to a very simple dildo, though.

Some thoughts on washing...

Hot water will dry faster, meaning less chance for anything to grow =\.  This is less true of rubber, more true of glass and metal.
Anything with crevices must have special attention paid.
Water, hot or not, is not a very powerful grime remover, but soaps (almost all kinds) at any temperature are.
Chemicals, such as chlorine, bleach (which should never be mixed), toy cleaners, soaps, all work at low temperature.
For the very worried, change the sanitizing agent occasionally.  Any colony that is resistant to one type will grow more powerful.  (If you were lucky enough to get a heat-resistant bacteria [if it even exists], you'd want to use a chemical agent at least once.)  This is the super-bug theory.
Keep everything dry afterwards.

Edit:  This is good stuff:

From a brewing site I used... They talk about sterlizing with chemicals, dry heat (the oven), wet heat, special cleaners..

FRSguy -> RE: When you boil Silicon sex toys... (7/8/2008 11:14:47 AM)

Wouldnt really do it at all.  They make all kinds of sterilizers you can use but boiling those kind of products can cause them to break down chemicaly so you end up with something that looks like a Dildo but leaches material. I've also seen products become brital.

X-P

Dumpster toys... sexy....

I'm just a clean freak when it comes to my toys and such.  As I don't have a pressurewasher- or a dishwasher (want!) I'l just stick to boiling them in my little pot. And no.. I'd never share them. O.o

Why don't you just do a 1:10 bleach:water soak for the toys? Its what the CDC recommends for cleaning and disinfecting. Personally I can't imagine sharing sex toys, I'd rather just get new ones for new people and keep mine just for me. But if you are sharing sex toys if you wanna be super careful, use condoms on them and then clean them. I also find for things I do use bleach/water for (like knives and rubber/metal impact toys) I find it helpful to soak them in soap/water afterwards and let them air dry to make sure the bleachy feel and smell is gone.

Madame4a -> RE: When you boil Silicon sex toys... (7/8/2008 1:40:44 PM)

I use condoms and/or gloves on all my toys -- cuts down on the need to stand over a steaming pot.. and cleaning can be fast and easy...

I know you don't have one.. but really, the dishwasher is the way to go...
