I have a question, and Let me preface right away, I am not interested ins nooty replies or nastyness, if you don't have anything constructive please take it somewhere else. I was wondering something, I want to work at least part time , And it'd have to be something that wouldn't get SSI breathing down my neck or get their attention and I was wondering if I could get jobs from temp agencies, because they're not ment to last. you just work a few weeks and you're done. I thought maybe I could check into that to make some extra cash an do something during the day, but not attract SSI's attention, Because A trip is coming up, the holidays are comeing up I need some extra cash flow coming in. Technically SSI has work programs and stuff that allow you only so much extra, but every time I try to find out about it in my area I can never get a strait answer, and I assume it'd have to be a pre approved job thing, and I am very limited in what I am able to do, since I have a bad back that goes out regularly, and that makes sitting standing walking and lifting difficult long term. wanted to make money doing odd jobs, this is a town zoned for farm animals, and horses are the it animal around here,we have a lot of horses just in this block, I thought I could ask to be a groomer, Brush them walk them , anything else light duty, but wouldn't you know every one does it themself, or has someone who does it for them already. And there's really no potential cash flows in "odd jobs"

Have you considered watching really short people while tall people are working? My ex-wife did that for a while and made killer cash staying at home for $1200 a week in the summer, about $800 in the winter. Since she was licensed, she was also able to write off anything that was used for the care and feeding of the wee beasties... SSI paid her for the food they ate (at a profit to her) and everything else we bought for the apartment that she used for their care and entertainment was written off in taxes. Think short term though, unless you have the patience of Job. You might check the laws in your area. Midget care can come in under the radar if you can find cash customers who need a cheap deal. The money isn't as good though. -SD-

Have you considered Pet Sitting? I used to Farm sit when families went on Vacation feeding everything from the Dogs to the Cattle. With the Holiday season around the corner it usually becomes a busy time....... Q

Are you a "crafty" kind of person? The holiday season is here, maybe there is a craft type item, or maybe some kind of homemade ornament or decoration you could make and sell at a flea market? chymes

I have no experience with SSI or their policies, but I know that a lot of small shops are hiring extra help for the holidays (at least around here). I know that even we (drug stores) are hiring some extra part time people until January. If you can't work retail then some of the other suggestions here are really good, although short people watching can require lots of up and down movement, lifting and carrying and other things that may be rough on your back.

I've often thought about taking an H&R Block course, to do short-term extra work during tax season. You have to pay for the class, but then you'd be employable during tax season. I fantasize about having a second income, just to reduce my debt load, but I think it would be exhausting. It would be difficult for me during the fall, because of the nature of my regular job.

First, the rules vary for ssi and ssdi. My understanding is, ssi does not permit any gainful employment whatsoever. If you receive Medicaid -- not Medicare -- you are almost certainly on ssi. In order to work, then, you'd need an employer or client who would not report your earnings to the IRS by way of W-2's or 1099's. This means, for the most part, you cannot perform work that generates a deduction for your employer or client. Since i know of no situation in which an employer would be denied a deduction, that leaves ad hoc clients. The idea of working "under the table" may appeal to you in the short run, but remember, you could not report these earnings on a 1040...and filing a false 1040 is not just a civil violation; it is a crime. There are two ways to increase household cash. First, earn income and second, reduce expenses. Are you currently paying for any services you could perform yourself, such as yard work? Are you careless about buying sweaters that need to be dry cleaned as opposed to washed? Every dime you can conserve creates the same effect as if you had earned a dime. Additionally, there is a grey area in which a barter system is in place. While the IRS has tried -- with very mixed results -- to tax people in bartering agreements, most are exempt. Can you do the books for a small convenient store in exchange for gasoline? Can you watch an elderly person as respite care in exchange for dental services? i recommend you go through every place you buy goods and services and consider approaching the smaller businesses for bartering. Next, investigate with your county commissioner's staff, etc., what government subsidies are available. The Lyon's Club pays for eyeglasses and exams. The Home Energy Assistance Program is federal, i believe. Many heating and electric companies have weatherization programs, some requiring repayment at a low rate, others provided for free. Visit your library and speak to the research librarian about other such programs in your area. The rules for ssdi are different. Generally, one is permitted to earn about $500 per month without loss of benefits. However, $501 may cost you your ssdi benefits. Speak to the Vocational Rehabilitation Program in your area; speak to head hunters; watch the want ads; and consider substitute teaching...bearing in mind you must be absolutely sure you do not exceed the ssdi income limit. Finally, if you have federal student loans, they can be placed in forbearance and may be discharged entirely if you are considered disabled and do not exceed a certain income level from wages during a set period. Call Sallie Mae and ask about "disability discharge"; it is a little-known program and you may get the run-around before reaching them. i hope some this has been helpful. However, i wrote it for educational purposes and not to provide the Op or anyone else with legal advice. I am really frugal, my expensive are next to none compared to others, however I did get really careless less than two months in a row and I found my self one day flat broke, and the next time nearly flat broke. So for the last three months I have spent next to nothing on myself, except for of course rent, and enternet, phone bill which is only 17 a month it’s no frills, and gamefly for my main source of off pc entertainment. So normally no I don't waste money. I don't buy clothing, I wear it that's not to say I don't. well ok I am a nudist most the time, but What I have I take care of I can wear it for years as long as I don't out grow it or it don't wear out. I take care of the things I have, I wash them on gentle cycle cold water, and I don't ever dry them in the dryer as it speeds up the wear and tear on clothes. I used to watch little people and I enjoy lil person sitting, however there’s no little people in my area, this whole block is Tall people. I don’t drive so anything outside the walking distance, which for me is very small, would mean someone would have to generously drive me to and from where I go. Which isn’t a problem my family will, but sometimes they’re not always available or not always. I’ve tried checking in like the church mom goes to, cause there’s some small people there, but every one already has a lil sitter, or in most cases you have to be liscenced and I wouldn’t qualify lol. Casual sitting would be better than being like say a daycare. I am very, very crafty and I love making crafts, The church my mom went to had a garage sale with crafts here and there for entertainment, I worked my ass off to make stuff which nobody bought,, because the yard sale, was advertised as just that, a yard sale. An people going to yard sales usually have something specific in mind, not crafts hehe. All though I have thought of going to flea markets if the price to be there is right, Ie if you don’t sell you wouldn’t be out 100’s for the space, and around here in the past at least schools have hosted craft sales, and Sacramento area in the holidays is nuts for bizars. There’s a yahoo group whutabargan for all or something, they let you list and sell free for anybody that doesn’t want to put up with fee’s from ebay, I list on there sometimes, But No bites, at least it’s free though. I also have a lot of books in storage, I have thought of sending them to used book stores, some places will give you money for them. Some places only give you store credit. Video game stores will also give you money or store credit. And it’s a viable way to make sometimes cash. I thought can collecting would be a good way to raise money but my dad has experience in that, and it’s been his and my experience that you have to have thoughsands of cans to make anything. He had like a whole years worth of cans stored up it should have been worth 80 or ninety dollars, they only gave him thirty for it. I had 4 bags of cans and 3 of glass and they only gave me 6 dollars for it:P

My understanding of SSI (am currently in the application process) is that you can work provided your income does not exceed the amount you are getting from SSI. If they pay you $579 a month, you can earn $579 a month from outside sources, but once you hit $580 it affects your benefits. They have some very complicated formulas for what counts as earned income and what doesn't, but as far as straight income from a job goes, that is the limit. Before you take my word for it, you might want to check with you local social security office, or read some of their FAQs on www.ssa.gov. hope this helps, and good luck with the jobs... i am in a similar situation myself.

ebay is always something to consider. so are pawn shops. one of the beauties about the 'bay is that you can not only sell things that you have, but sometimes you can buy low and then turn around and sell high. while it's a pain in the arse to traipse to the post office around the holidays, it's a way to pay for the holidays and to get some spare cash to pay the bills. it's also a good place to look for things you need to buy (other than food and utilities and the like). i wish you well.

trust me, the H&RBlock course isn't as easy as you'd think. i know...this is the second year i've taken the course and it's harder than last year, plus...if you don't score high enough, you don't get hired with them. also, not everyone works as much as they would like with all the people that currently work and first year people don't have much choice on when to work.

Good luck, I had a slipped disk and pinched nerves due to a severe accident and I still didn't qualify (I couldn't work for almost a year). I also didn't qualify for food stamps when I was making $600 a month (the cut off for one person is $1000 a month), housing assistance (again, way below the cut-off) I discovered that you have to be something else. For example, you can't just be unable to work, but you have to be unable to work and have a kid or you can't just not make enough to eat, you have to not make enough to eat and be a minority. But that's a totally other topic..........

YEah, help can suck sometimes. I'd like a part time if not less job, but When you work they will attack how much you get on SSI. There's a catch 22 huh. Also you can't have more than 2 thoughsand dollars in the bank or you're not elligable any more, of course that was one thing failed to mention when I signed up. And so I owed them 13 thoughsand dollars cause I was over the "need help" amount for 6 months. I got an apeal thankfully. It seems to me like they should welcom you saving money, but if you're on SSI saving money isn't a valued trait. To get below the legal limit again I had to actually go out and spend enough money to satisfy them enough to keep me on it. I bought things I needed like clothes and stuff, and a new tv and stuff but still you know.......

this comes from a government that others have elected. i have never voted because there was nobody worth voting for and the two people that i would have voted for dropped out of the race so i swore i never would vote. i know, i've heard it before, "if you don't vote, you got no right to complain". well, if they put someone up there that stands for what people REALLY need, not service the rich...then i might actually vote. but, until then... enough from the minority department.[:D]
