candystripper -> Something on my back (7/12/2008 8:31:55 AM)

There's something on my back; a small pebble-like thing.  I just found it -- days after my physical of course.  Skin cancer runs in my family...I suppose I'll have to get it looked at.  *Sighs*

Anyone else have anything like this?  What did it turn out to be?

My mom's had things called skin tags. they just crop up randomly and you can opt to get them removed but they're not harmful. they usually stay the same color as the rest of your skin. Skin cancer spots (my dad has had several) almost always get darker, and look like misshapen moles. Either way, I'd say get it checked out by a dermatologist.

Thank you miss; gheesh, one more MD to see.  It's like a part time job!

some people (like me) get a bunch more moles as they get...ahem...older.  anyway, it's the type of thing that can run in the family.

the last big one I thought for sure had to be skin cancer (on my back), but the dr. said no.  there's nothing like the peace of mind a quick check can provide.

Yep, the top three.  Skin cancer....moles..(which by the way turn into skin cancer sometimes) and skin tags.
A skin tag is just a little almost pebble size piece of skin hanging there.

Don't waste too much time.  Skin cancer can kill.  After all your skin is your biggest organ in your body.

If the spot on your back gets larger, changes color, changes in height, or becomes asymmetrical, it could be a sign of melanoma and should be looked at immediately.

I have had a basil skin cancer taken off my ear last year.  This gives me a much higher percentage of getting another basis or worse.

So I go into the cute P.A. for a skin check every six months.  Kind of fun having her checkout every square inch of my body, sometimes with a magnifying glass.  She likes the rose tat on the end of my penis.

Don't guess about bumps and growing things, get it checked.

I developed few red spots on my back and I had it checked out ant it turned out to be coccidiamosis.( I don,t think the spelling is right). It is also salled valley fever spots and it can be treated with antibiotics. Don,t wait too long to have it checked out.

Just keep an eye on it.

Certainly worth getting it checked. I had skin cancer 2 years ago and had a large area removed from my upper right back. I have felt unwell for the last few months with bad headaches and sickness. 4 weeks ago I was diagnosed with a brain tumour the size of a golf ball. It was removed 2 weeks ago and they found that it was a secondary cancer which means it came from the skin cancer.

It is not worth hanging around wondering. Much better to find out for sure.

Actually my body produces fibriod cysts that just stay forever, generally eventually it will errupt and end up something like a boil, I generally do it myself or have someone else if I cant reach. I had one for 16 years that I had checked by a dr and it finally went nasty and went back to the dr that thought it was a boil that needed lancing. On my rear too which made sitting not an easy task. She said after she lanced and it healed she would go in and remove the fibroid which is benign, when lancing she ( gross warning) actually got close enough to find the fibroid had burst and caused an infection. Liking to see gross things ( yeah I a bit weird) it looked like a white empty sweet pea shell. Before that it was just a bump under the skin close to the  top of the skin.

As others recommended I would get it checked out per others recommendations as it could be something else. But my body creates these every year or two, once I notice I usually dispatch it before it gets ugly, I generally use a sterile diabetic lancet as the very center has no feeling in it, and just work it out.  Yeah yeah, not the most bright ideas and I hate physicians and try to avoid them a all cost. Or mostly.  My crazy dr tho I am religious in seeing.

But for the most part I just dont get 'sick' I have a extremely high immunity count I guess it kill most common colds, virus and flus. Havent been sick enough to see a dr in 4 years. Tho when I moved to NYC and everything was close and in walking distance within a couple of blocks I went and had a full and through checkup, inside and out.
two thinks showed, extremely low vitamin d count and low calcium, Vit D due to me rarely leaving the house and getting actual sunshine.  Too bad a super dupper immunity system cant fix the old brain upstairs LOL

If it's not only the size but also the texture/hardness of a pebble, you might have what my grandmother had on her hands... I think it's something like giant cell tumors?  No prior history of cancer required, and they're benign, they're just annoying little hard bumps that typically grow along tendons and ligaments.

Real simple surgery to have them cut out, they looked like little hardened coffee beans when they came out, ewwww.... but yeah, as far as I know, they're not life-threatening.

CookieSlave -> RE: Something on my back (8/26/2008 10:34:08 AM)

Doesn't matter what it is, could be, will be....    If it's something on your body that you noticed enough to question it and/or wonder about it, it's enough to get you to a doc to get it checked out.  Could turn out to be nothing, but I'd rather feel stupid going to the doc over what turns out to be a massive back zit then NOT going and having it be something worse.

Don't panic before you go, wait and see...

Skin tags generally do not appear on your back, to the doctor, quick.

NovelApproach -> RE: Something on my back (9/28/2008 7:46:04 AM)

If its a small, pebble sized hard lump *under* the skin, it might be a giant comedo (monster blackhead) or a cyst.  Comedomes and cysts aren't dangerous, but you might like to get it looked at, just in case (as everyone else suggests) it might be something more serious.
