L8bloomer -> Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/13/2008 5:02:41 PM)

So a few days ago (Wednesday) I started having a dry cough. Not non stop, but just more than would happen in an average day. Next day the same, plus woke up with a bit of a sore throat. Friday was the same except that half way through the day my voice started to crack a bit. Saturday my voice is definitely affected and my throat is sore. Malaise ensues and I start feeling like crap. I go to bed early but wake up early on Sunday to an extremely painful sore throat. I spritz throat spray and this helps a bit - until it wears off. I manage to get a few more zzzz's. I've been trying to keep myself hydrated and spritzed a few more times with the throat spray. Now I'm starting to feel some pressure in my ears - very much like the beginnings of what you get when you're flying and you feel the need to "pop" your ears.

So...anyone else endure this? Do you have some remedies that have helped with symptoms? As for advising me to see my doctor...depending on how I feel tomorrow morning will determine if I call her or not. Oh. Forgot to mention. I have swollen glands too. Throat glands!

Thadius -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/13/2008 5:05:42 PM)

Sounds like an infection of some sort, the pressure in the ears could be from a sinus infection.  I am not a doctor, and these are merely guesses, it wouldn't hurt to give the doc a call even if you are feeling a bit better tomorrow.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/13/2008 5:19:57 PM)

Gargling warm, salty water helps with a sore throat.  You can try flushing your sinuses out with a saline solution as well.

You could have a number of different things.  It could be something serious like Strep, so I'd call the doc tomorrow.

Ah men...gotta love 'em! :) Always seeking a solution. Thank you for the advice on the salt solution...I will try that. Any other home remedies that might help alleviate my sore throat?

Edit:

Wooo hooo! I'm elevated from "newbie" to "kinky"...*grins* I'd shout...but you know...the sore throat and everything. :(

NeedingMore220 -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/13/2008 5:59:37 PM)

It definitely sounds like strep or a bad sinus infection.  Get to the doc's!  Take Advil for the pain and gargle with salt water.

I always swear by honey lemon tea for a sore throat- but if you have symptoms for more than 3 days, get thee to a physician... or at least a Nurse Practioner or PA.

pahunkboy -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/14/2008 3:26:28 AM)

on the swollen glands... wear a scarf and or hat for an hour or so.

you could drink orange juice or something like it.

limit stimuli such as loud sounds, bright light...etc.

if your body isnt able to fight the germ,  then you might need an anti-biotic...

JulieorSarah -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/14/2008 3:35:42 AM)

My Nan had a cure all ...

Take a glass
half fill with whiskey
top with milk, and add honey to taste.

Milk and honey are optional!

Maya2001 -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/14/2008 6:52:17 AM)

Possibly strep which would require antibiotics it is also contagious ...

if you have dogs pay very very close attention to them  they can contract strep from humans but for them it affects them as a severe respiratory infection  with  can often lead to death, mortality rates in dogs are extremely high  and becomes highly contagious from dog to dog  if they contract so early treatment is an absolute must, as well as isolation from other dogs and extremely  hygiene measures should be practiced if handling multiple dogs if one is sicu including changing clothes  to prevent the spread.  A severe outbreak had occured at one US track after a trainer with a strep throat entered a track greyhound compound which lead to the death of several greyhounds and had spread to outside the track to the pet community  by those handling the dogs .
quote:

While the symptoms caused by an infection with Canine Streptococci in the first instance are similar to a severe bout of kennel cough, as the disease progresses a deep, non-productive cough typical of fluid on the lungs develops.The dog then often develops spontaneous haemorrhaging including coughing up blood, bleeding from the nose, and in some cases bloody diarrhoea.It is these symptoms that were typical of those dogs that have died.

After you get to a doctor and follow their advice, I'd recomend dimetapp get better bears.... they're lollipops with throat soothing ingredients. I swear by them and they taste really good too.

OnlyMels -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/14/2008 7:49:55 AM)

I've had strep throat a bunch of times and it sounds like it. If you have a fever go to your doctor cause strep throat is very infectious. But might be a good idea to see a dr anyway just cause they might be able to give you something for the pain if it isn't strep throat.

Candlescandles -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/14/2008 9:04:11 AM)

You also want to avoid dairy.  It increases mucas production and if it is a sinus thing that is NOT what you want.

See a DR!  I had it two weeks ago and it didn't get better until I saw a doctor.

time to go to the doc

spankoramanyc -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/14/2008 7:42:12 PM)

Ginger tea is wonderful to soothe a sore throat.  The doctor will give you the medications you need if you do have strep.  The ginger tea will also help with any stomach discomfort from antibiotics.  You can buy the tea or just purchase a ginger root and boil it down to make a concentrate.  You can keep this concentrate in the fridge for up to a week. Add a small amount to hot water...you can add honey to sweeten the tea.  Also, organic apple cider vinegar can help soothe a sore throat.

Good luck and get well soon!!!

I agree that it is time to go to the doctor. While there is a considerable evidence that allowing your body to heal naturally (even when medication would work) can be very benefical, after 5 days (as per the date on your first post) if you are not seeing considerable improvement it is time to get some assistance.

My home remedy for sore throats is a mixture of eucalyptus oil & LOCAL unpasteurized honey (natural health food stores usually carry it, or at least the ingredients). The local unpasteurized honey is important because it is composed of elements from your environment and as such can help to build immunity if one of those elements is causing your illness. I usually find that a table spoon 3 times per day plus mixing the eucalyptus / honey with hot water (basically a tea) helps (also keeps you hydrated).

OTKkindaGirl -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/14/2008 9:18:58 PM)

me too!  i have been sick exactly a week with the same symptoms.  i have done the otc meds, sinus rinse, ginger tea, gargle with the salt water.   there is one thing i haven't tried yet and that is a receipe that i got from the ENT's that i use to work with.  it is a nasty thing called the triple rinse but i am going to break down and do it tonight.  it is a tbsp each of hydrogenperoxide, listerine, and water.  gargle spit repeat.   yuck!!!!

jro2020 -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/16/2008 10:16:57 PM)

I've taken to gargelling, and then swallowing a shot of vodka before bed when I start to get a sore throat.  I used to get alot of bronchitis and strep but since I have started this, the symptoms have never gone past a mild irritation.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (7/16/2008 10:22:46 PM)

When I went to the dr for my sore throat the pamplet on sore throats said not to drink milk cause milk increases mucus, and irritation.

UPDATE:

For the next few days, my cough got worse and my sore throat didn't improve, so I went to see my doc on the Thursday following my initial post here. I had pneumonia in March and I just didn't want to repeat that event.

My doc had previously suggested gargling with salt water for a sore throat, as slaveboyfoyou and NeedingMore220 suggested. I don't know why it sounds so utterly unappealing to me. When OTKkindaGirl mentioned hydrogen peroxide I thought "hey, I'll try that". So I gargled with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide Wednesday night (ensuring I didn't swallow) and Thursday morning my throat was so much better! Still a bit sore, but so vastly improved that I could manage it easily. Now I don't know if it was a coincidence in the timing of it  and my sore throat was on the mend or if the hydrogen peroxide actually did anything. I know my doc was mortified that I gargled with the stuff. I know enough from my clinical chemistry classes in school that it wouldn't do well to swallow it as it is an oxidizer. At any rate, she said it wasn't strep throat. Initially she suspected mononucleosis because quite a number of the clinic employees had tested positive for it and while I don't work in that clinic, I do work in healthcare. But it turned out negative. So it was just a really nasty sore throat. Since the cough I had was not  improving, she prescribed an antibiotic which really knocked out the cough and cold. However, after 3 days, I started getting a rash on my lower legs and arms. And oh my was it itchy!!!!! I can't say absolutely that it was from the antibiotic, but my doc switched me to another one. The itchies have taken a long time to go away. My cough had come back, but it's slowly diminishing too. Four more days of antibiotics to go!

So that is my update. :)

fungasm: The sore throat I had was way beyond the influences of honey lemon tea. Swallowing was painful and made sleeping difficult. My Dad has a sore throat remedy which consisted of a concoction of hot water, powdered ginger and honey that worked really well for a sore throat I had years ago...but hadn't worked for me since then. :(

SarahorJulie:  *LOL* I'm sure had I tried your grandmother's remedy, I wouldn't care about my sore throat! But the truth is, I don't drink anything alcoholic, so I guess that suggestion isn't an option for me. ;)

Maya2001: I don't have any pets, so no worries there, but thanks for the info, it's useful to know. I love animals and I find dogs to be such entertaining lovable animals so it was sad to read about the greyhounds.

Thanks to everyone else for your comments and suggestions. :)

Oh....one more thing...reading posts too close to bedtime can invade your dreams...not an altogether unpleasant experience...although I couldn't recall the exact details of the dream, the lingering feeling from it when I woke indicated it was a naughty dream. And slaveboyforyou was starring in it! Sorry, but I'm not a Domme and I know he isn't a Dom, so I don't know what sort of naughtiness took place since one of us would have had to reverse roles...and considering it was a good feeling kind of dream, I'm thinking it wasn't me who went dominant.*L*

MissLatexStorm -> RE: Sore Throat - Advice Please!! (8/14/2008 11:48:23 AM)

This tastes horrible but it works:

Mug of hot water
1 tsp of cayenne pepper
1 tsp of minced garlic
1 tsp ginger (fresh is best)
Add honey to make it drinkable

Also gargle with some cayenne and warm water

Take 1 Tbsp of Honey mixed with Cayenne pepper
