Cuffs & Collar question - 7/16/2008 7:38:43 AM

I have searched the boards and while I found similar questions - nothing exactly the same and nothing that didn't have some old links.  So at the risk of sounding like a total newbie. . . .

I am looking for a good collar and cuffs set.  I've only had a collar I made myself - and cuffs bought at a renfaire.

I'm looking for what people think of the fur vs. lambskin vs. padded on the lining options.  And if they'd have a different opinion for collar vs. cuffs?

Information on what I like/want/ will use for:  We do not typically leave me in them for days at a time.  Hours is common - overnight on a rare occassion.  I do get overheated fairly easily.  I am a BBW.   For the first time, in a long time, we have money to spend on this. . but don't want to break the bank.  We do not do suspension.  I work and tutor and can't have marks on a regular basis.  We will use these WITH rope bondage.  Think that's all that's relevant.

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions and opinions.

I'm working on some patterns with top grain leather outers and neoprene padded ones-lined with garment leather. How soon do you need them? No risk on your part if we can do a deal.

I'll make them up and ship upfront. You can send them back if you do not like them, and pay me if you do.

I wouldn't get cuffs lined in fur or lampskin if i were you.  You will sweat in them.  The oil from your skin will be on them.  The lining will get dirty and won't look nice after a time, and as far as i know you can't wash fur.

My own cuffs are lined in suede which makes them comfortable for wearing.  It also keeps any metal from touching my skin as i have metal allergies.

Yeah I kept looking at lambskin and fur because they are soft and I'm a wuss and don't want marks.  But the sweating kills me.
Padded seems expensive when I look and I'm not sure where our upper limit is (though my Dom spent a few hundred on the shop today - so that curbs my enthusiam a little).  What other options won't rub me raw on the edges.
Oh and to make matters worse - I have just about no neck.

I'm not big on the metal stuff.  Neither is He.
Really want to stick with Leather.

sooo. . still looking for an answer or two.
Of the styles (in leathers) that don't have lambskin or fur. .
are they really rough on the neck?
Do the edge rub?
Will they leave marks?

Looking for any experience anyone has with this.

It's going to depend on the leather, how thin your skin is-and how much you sweat. If your skin is very easily abraded, my answer  would be NOT to wear anything like a cuff for longer than a few hours at a time.

A few hours is really the longest I'd ever be looking at.
Usually it's just a portion of the play time that cuffs or collar are on.
I'm pretty prone to showing marks (which He likes in other areas) but they do typically fade quickly,
And yes, I sweat pretty easy.  Air conditioning is becoming a required part of play time. . . LOL
when you say it depends on the leather?  is this a quality issue - or type?

Moist skin abrades easily. Have you considered a removable soft cloth boot to soak up the sweat?

Remember that most makers only think in terms of making a quick buck. Not in long term use or any real sustainability in bondage. They build for a quick beat and fuck-which is about 75% of the market. I think a bit beyond that.

it might not be what you are wanting (leather) but i have had great experience with the sports sheets brand of cuffs.  neoprene and velcro whch hasnt ever left marks on me (and i bruise easily!).

they're fairly low-cost too, in the $30 range if i remember correctly.

As far as the bigger "stores" are concerned, the classic story is normally, the more you pay the better quality you will get. A good leather worker who you can go to can often charge less but I know that some people prefer to deal with larger companies.

I agree with the previous comments that say padded is the way to go, though equally if you get a high quality of leather the cuffs alone can be comfortable enough to wear for long periods by themselves (I own a pair of wrist and ankle cuffs, one unpadded, one with a layer of suede-like material that are both comfortable enough to wear for long periods and haven't been greatly affected by sweat).

As far as the large companies are concerned, some of the ones that I have had a good look at (though not neccesarily dealt with in person) include
JT's stockroom - http://www.stockroom.com/Premium-Garment-Leather-Wrist-Cuffs-P2916.aspx (I admit now I am never sure about any sizes except my own so I apologise if they are wrong but it might give you some ideas anyway)
   - http://www.stockroom.com/3-Ring-Slave-Collar-w-Locking-Buckle-P1125.aspx

Autumn's toybox - http://www.bdsmtoybox.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=3203

Extreme Restraints - http://www.extremerestraints.com/premium-locking-leather-cuffs_199.html

If you have any other specifics I never tire of looking at cuffs, lol, but I hope this helps a lil

And if you want to try things out, I have had varying degrees of success with ebay.....got a nice armbinder from there and yet a not so good legbinder....again, what you pay is what you get really applies.

Thank you all for the help.  I'm definitely getting a better picture of what quality cuffs/ collar would be.
And that fuzzy is only going to be good when I first put them on.

are there comfortable (or not) leather cuffs that are designed or good for 24/7 wear?

i'm going to guess not, since Leatherist was talking about only wearing them for a few hours at a time, and most of the big stores not putting long-term thought into their products...

you may want to consider something that is padded and lined in leather  rather than suede or fur.... which would allow for easy cleaning  plus the oils from your skin would cause them  to become even softer with use

Something about the medical stuff doesn't do it for us. . but the idea of the padded/ garment leather lined cuffs & collar seems like the best idea.  Will be so nice to have a "real" set.

Now I just need to see what we can afford - especially since all this searching for cuffs and collar have led to Him eagerly eyeing other items as well.  ok, me too :)

bananafish,  Just to qualify the comfort thing.  I've slept with the RenFaire cuffs on before.  They are pretty basic cuffs. . hard leather with faux fur lining.  As long as there weren't too tight - it wasn't a problem to keep them on all night.  But at 24hours they weren't all that fun anymore.
I'm really not sure what the 24/7 slaves wear.  But we have to pretend we are normal most of the time.
