My partner and I have long avoided having me bath or shower wearing things that lock (collar, chastity devices) even though the device itself might be fine, for fear that water in the lock would one day cause the lock to fail.

The locks themselves are standard small brass padlocks, but the shank, and I assume the springs inside, are steel and could rust.  Are we right to be concerned?  Has anyone subjected one of these locks to repeated baths or showers?  If the problem is real, can one find water tolerant locks somewhere?  (I've looked, but have never found.)

I wouldn't be to worried about it, but you could always use canned air to blow out any water from the keyway after bathing.  Any residual water would almost certainly evaporate before causing any corrosion.  If you really want to be sure, several padlock manufacturers make padlocks designed for outdoor use or marine environments, such as Abus' Inox line.

could always get those little plastic baggies to wrap the locks up for bathing.   effectivly waterproofing them.  almost all locks unless specifly designed for rust proofing will rust.   I'm not sure where to get rust proof locks in the small size though :(   The litle baggies i'm referring to are commonly found in beading stores for beads or jewelry.   put it on the lock then put an elastic around it to seal it and no worries about rust.  If a little water gets in just use the compressed air as mentioned above or even just a hair dryer.   But the brass locks will rust and it doesn't take much if the water is left inside them to long.

make sure the hair dryer is hot, especially if it's on a chastity device... *evil grin*

Thanks for the pointer Vad.  We have used plastic locks on chastity devices.  They don't look nearly as nice as a brass one, but on the other hand there is something to be said for the "Eek!" I feel when one comes out ... it means it's going to be a while!

It's more of an issue for my collar, because I wear it most days and the aesthetics are more important.  Incidentally, it's one of yours. :)

I have one of the little brass master locks that's been in the shower a dozen times or more. the brass is tarnished but the lock is still smooth as when I bought it.

Yes I can understand that a plastic lock on a collar is not even close to acceptable.The brass Master Lock is a very good lock and should last quite a while. Thanks Diphon.  I'm not surprised that it has held up well for a dozen showers.  I'm curious though about how they hold up through hundreds of them.

Check the condition of the locks regularly. They are cheap so they can even be replaced periodically if the condition gets worse.

That's what I was thinking...just pick up a bunch of cheapies......
unless you're the type that likes to try and lockpick around them ;D

I had a sailboat for over ten years that was outside, not covered, in all weather.  The hatch was locked most of the time with a small lock that can easily be attained from West Marine or BoatUS.  (They mearged so one is as good as the other.)  I never oiled it or did anything to it.  It just worked every time.
