i'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for where i could have a custom piece made from tungsten, either forged or lathed.

i don't have the exact dimensions in front of me, but the plan is to make a 'ball weight' out of tungsten in the shape of a donut/torus.

from my research, it looks like i would need to have it made from nickel bonded tungsten carbide (hypoallergenic), with a smooth polished finish...

thanks in advance for any leads or suggestions.

mmm, I love the look of tungsten carbide! My husband has a tungsten carbide wedding ring, we couldn't be more pleased. Looking it up on google might yield some results, then emailing the sites owners for more information. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

tungsten isn't too expensive, as a metal...

to work it, might cost some money, since it's so hard and dense...

most online jewelers overcharge for the wedding bands, etc...

anyhow, the reason i would like tungsten is because platinum is too expensive and malleable.

ok, kidding about that, though one day...

the real reason is density. a 1lb tungsten ring is about half the size of a 1lb stainless steel ring...

and you could easily add rings for long term wear...

you also have to cut it with diamond tipped tooling, seeing as how most cutting tools are tungsten carbide.

very true, if the tungsten is to be lathed...

most of the jewelers that sell rings indicate that the rings are made using molds...

so i'm thinking molding is probably cheaper/easier...

it is because only heat is required, but then you will have casting flash to remove. The advantage to using a lathe or mill is that you can make one part, you dont have to make a wax plug, then a sand mold, then melt out the wax, and melt the steel then pour the mould, then grind the surface.

i was mostly familiar with the mechanical properties of tungsten... Didn't realize the specific gravity was quite that high. Being a cheapskate, i'd probably go with lead coated in liquid rubber... it's still a 50% improvement over most steels and doesn't require all the specialty equipment. i could make a lead ball weight in my garage right now... tungsten, not so much!!

rubber or not, i'd be worried about a mass of lead near my bollocks for an extended period of time (months)...

i like the look of tungsten wedding bands, the few i've seen, and i would love to have something like that above my balls...

the bigger problem i've had in the past, when finding machinists who do tungsten work, is that i give the specs, and request it be hypoallergenic, and it's intended for close body contact and they drop contact with me...

either because they don't work with tungsten alloys appropriate for jewelry/body contact or they've figured out what my intent is and they're prudish.

either way, they just cease communication, and it's frustrating...
