If its up to you, then you can tie the laces any way you like. Longer ones allow for more loops, or you could tie two shorter laces together to make one long one.
Or, you could just use more than one lace at a time. Another cheap alternative that I haven't tried, is all-purpose clothesline. With that, you could cut your own length. The kind I have is soft, and does have some give. And its thicker than the shoelaces, so it may make you feel more snug. My slave is currently only allowed a shoelace.
When I collared my boy, I also tied him in My shoelace for the first time. I reached down and took the lace off of my own tennis shoe, just a plain white lace, and looped it around his scrotum and wound it in such a way as to lace up his penis, tying it just behind the head. So again, if you are not owned you can try it for yourself, and experiment. For My boy, it is singularly, deliciously humiliating when My penis swells within My lace, straining against it and reminding him that he is forbidden to touch it, which causes him to become even more aroused, but with no way to relieve himself within the constraints of My standing orders. Lovely.
