YourhandMyAss -> How long should you brush out an undercoat? (7/20/2008 7:52:43 PM)

Ginger is a Springer spaniel collie mix and she has tons of undercoat I can brush her for like 25 mins strait and undercoat will STILL be coming off. Should I brush her till undercoat stops coming out, or what?

i had a cocker spaniel once with the same problem....finally i brushed him for about 10 minutes a day and it slowly got to be less and less so that it wasnt' a problem anymore.  i think at first the hair is a problem but with time and daily brushing it goes away and stops being such a pain in the bum.

christine, it is indeed a problem at first cause when I brush her I have enough hair to make a second doggie lol, and you have to do this brushing outside where fur everywhere aint gonna matter much. I learned that the hard way the first time I stupidly decided to brush her in bed, because she was already relaxed and at hand. Cuz if you chase her down plop her onto the table then begin to brush she's anxious and she don't really behave for me, so I was like hey! now's my chance.

Was a mistake.

Yep.  It was the same way with my german shepherd.  Her blow coat was outta control.  Outside...  it only takes once to learn that lesson.

Warren ra Dog is still growing undercoat, I swear - someone actually started a business where you send your cat and dog hair and they spin it and knit something for you - yeuchh!

It's an interesting concept, but I'll pass.

I could only brush one side of my dog at a time. She hated it but was good and laid there. No way would she turn over for me to do the other side though.

I remember reading about that. I would think it morbid to wear a sweater made from her fur now that she's gone though.

So are you supposed to brush them untill no undercoat is coming out, aside from the tip to brush them everyday for about 10 minutes?
