Status: offline 		Has anyone else read this?  I just finished it and it has seriously disturbed me and caused me to have second thoughts about this lifestyle.  How many people are out there like the four libertines and what are my odds of coming across someone like them?  I mean I enjoy being dominated and I enjoy a little bit of pain and all but the things described in this story are extreme to put it mildly.  What are everyone's thoughts on this?  Could someone give me advice on how to detect or avoid someone who might turn out to be like these guys?  Yes I know about the generic safe contact rule but if I'm hundreds or thousands of miles away from them they could not help me if something like this happens.

I had the experience of watching Passolini's Salo a few years ago, and it certainly did not shocked me as it shocked you, since the story takes place in a moment in history when brutality and insanity like that was a way to spend the last days of the Third Reich in complete desperate agony and madness for both parties, the teens and these 4 sad characters. I personaly took the story as part of a histerical episode in history.

Although, in the real world, there might be some nutso with psycological pathologies like that. To avoid that, keep yourself within the BDSM community you are familiar with and get involved with people known by your contacts.

This way the odds of finding such antisocial creeps are none. Just keep an eye on people's references.

Status: offline 		I haven't read the whole thing of 120 Days yet, but have seen Salo and took a class that discussed it and Sade's work in depth.... When it comes down to it, you consent to what you want. Do not jump into things right away, meet in a public place, etc. and protect yourself by getting to know someone.

Another glaring point int he books first few pages is that the young women involved were not voluntarily going into most of these things. It is fantasy written by a man who was incarcerated and probably not all that sane given his wonderful view in the Bastille of the chopping block.

While the Marquis de Sade is the namesake for Sadism, he is nowhere near the ultimate sadist as people in the scene see it. He did not practice consent and there was very little safety in what he did/fantasized about doing.

As for avoiding meeting someone like the libertines... get to know the potential Dom/Domme you are interested in first. Negotiate your interests, limits and what you find too extreme. Be open to talking frankly about it and speaking up about what you want or do not want. Most Domly types are not mind readers :)

Status: offline 		DeSade's works bear about as much in common with the "reality" of BDSM as it exists today, as L. Frank Baum's "Oz" resembles Chicago.

The guy was writing dirty stories to back up his wild-ass political theories. Because, lets face it, if it weren't for his inclusion of some "Penthouse Variation" erotica (seen through the dark, squishy glass of his imagination) no one would have bothered to read his ideas about how France should have been restructured, post revolution.

Beats me why people today revere him as they do. Anne Rice wrote better BDSM fiction in her sleep.

So, that answer is "no"... you don't have much of a chance of meeting up with someone like his characters... but, then again, it's always best to set up safe calls, let others know who you are off to play with, etc... there ARE abusers and nutcases out there... they just don't have a philosophy about it.

Status: offline 		I agree with bipolarber.  There is a difference between fantasy and reality.  Most four year olds figure that out.  Sometime us adults forget it.

I write.   Some of what I write involves consentual pain that is beyond what I am willing to deliver.  Just because I like to read or write something, doesn't mean I want to do it.

Similarly, Agatha Christie never murdered anyone.   

There are criminals out there.  But I think you are more likely to meet one in a bar, (particularly if you are drunk), than here.

In his day, the Marquis De Sade’s was more famous as a political libertine entity that stood for complete freedom, unrestrained by morality, religion or law than as an erotic novelist.  It wasn’t until long after his death, after spending most of his life incarcerated for political crimes, that his erotic works became popular.  During most of his life, his own writings had been outlawed and banned. 

The book you read was not one of his erotic novels but rather it was a political statement, expressed in symbolic violent and brutally sexually terms sometimes.  When you read about a serial killer using handcuffs, you don’t think you will become like him if you use handcuffs too?  I think what threw you off was that you weren’t aware that not all of the Marquis De Sade’s writings were BDSM erotic novels hailed by the alt lifestyle community. 

I suggest you study up a bit about that book and how the point was that the government (wealthy dominants) is oppressing and controlling the civilians (prostitutes/prisoners), and eventually they step in to interfere with the utmost freedoms like freedom to choose who you love (slaves caught & punished/killed for fucking eachother w/o permission) and freedom of speech (cutting their tongues out). 

If you want to study up on the Marquis De Sade’s erotic works you may find Justine and Juliette of interest. They are the books that made the Marquee De Sade famous in the kink communities.
