I agree with the author .   I like to get a sense of who someone is before I move off CM  to personal mail or IM's .  I've not had  a problem with the chat feature here - though I know I had to download a recent "Java" for it to work smoothly -  and trust me , I'm no computer wiz - but it was easy !

To me - so much wasted time can be avoided by seeing if there's enough common basics between me and someone else , to want to know more .  I don't have the time or inclination to  IM  , call , or meet everyone who asks  ( sometimes demands ! ) it  of me.

I prefer progressing in comfortable stages - email awhile ,  IM ,  some phone time - then if all that goes well, and feels right - a face to face .   I've found that anyone with a modicum of common sense has no problem with moving through these stages with me .    [;)]

I'm not big on any sort of chat feature to be honest. I've generally got better things to do. However, I have used the CM chat and HATE IT!!

All of that being said, I do have yahoo IM, have had it for over a decade. I've also got MSN which I rarely use, and AIM for work stuff.

If someone asks me "do you have yahoo?" I quite simply reply. "Yes I do." I can answer the question and still not give them my personal information. If and when they ask for it, I tell them, "no, I am not giving that to you at this time" or something along those lines.

My yahoo id involves my full name, first and last. Not many are going to get it.

The chat feature will not work with anyone who isnt running xp or later, so many people who still use 98 can not use such features,

Im running vista, have a great internet connection, but on many occasions, usually during cm peaks, I can not access or get anywhere near cm chat. As well as even trying it will not work. Either both people pop into empty rooms, or one can not get in or my page will not load. Its a very annoying thing, when you wish to chat but nothings working, I give out my yahoo after a couple of emails, Sometimes the first or second, sometimes the 10th or 20th it depends on the person. But I dont see anything wrong with asking.

Maybe the "doms" read your profile and because utterly smitten with you, maybe you have interests listed that are uncommon to them and they wish to chat more about it. But I honestly wouldnt be offended simply because someone asked to move to yahoo. Ive asked on second emails simply because I was not going to be on cm again for some time and wished to continue to talk to them.

I don't mind exchanging an email (or cmail) a time or two at first, but I do prefer going to Yahoo relatively soon.  It is SO much easier getting to know a persons personality and sense of humor in a "real time" chat than it is to write several paragraphs, wait a day or three for a response, and often have to go back and look at exactly what I wrote in order to undestand for sure what THEY are responding to.  And I really don't like CM's chat features.  Also, I do have a number of people on Yahoo that I chat with and only need to have Yahoo open to see who is available to chat with.  Blocking someone from Yahoo is no harder than blocking someone in CM whether chat or email.  I also like that I can archive my chat conversations and can go back and read them later if I want to.  I can go back later and retreive things like kid's names, favorite music, birthdays, and all kinds of things so that I don't have to try to rmember it as I go or write it down while I'm chatting.
