While polyester can't dye, you -can- do Nylon with dyes done by the Dharma company.

They are a -really- good source for dyes.

As for koolaide, as far as I know it only works on natural fibers--cotton/wool/linen/etc. Makes pretty colors but they fade VERY fast and will work out, ie they rub off on stuff.

Best to use professional dyes. Dharma is good. RIT is ok, I use that when I need instant gratification. The color always comes out duller than I think it should.

Why dye embroidery floss though? There's about a zillion colors.

You're have not been listening perverse, lol I already said why I wanted to dye stuff. Creativity and I did it myself, I didn't go out and buy some randomly made color, I put the thought into it the time and I made it myself. The gratification of knowing yours is special and not randomly produced "stuff"

My mom has about a zillion colors quite litterally lol, she has like 5 huge baskets and bins and zippies with thread in it. I raid hers for right now. But I am always on the prowl for a "craft fix"

And actyally there's quite a few tips on dying yarn and they made clothes out of it and their yarn has never faded or rubbed off. that might happen with inferior dyeing methods but none of the sites about knitting with coolaid dyed yarn said it came out.

Of course that was yarn and not floss lol.

I dig, but I guess if I'm going to take the time to dye something myself I'd rather spin it too.

Get some authentic wool fiber and spin it, then dye it. Or dye it then spin it. It's great for embroidery and makes it even more personalized. Or cotton, but I find cotton is MUCh harder to find in fiber form.

I am all about doing stuff myself, but I guess I figure that I'd rather use modern technology when it makes it easeir. That wya, I can spend more time on the construction of whatever I'm making.

I'ven ever seen it come out of natural fibers, but off stuff like nylon and rayon it tends to rub off. Even linen, sometimes. Though linen mostly just fades. Then again, most dyes fade on linen.

Sometimes I like the quick fix of just going and buying just what you need how you need it, but I am so creative and I crave experiments sometimes. I am also a bit of a mad scientist:P

That does explain the mystery fabric known as polyester, i had wondered since my shoelace fiasco. Thank You that Lady Hibiscus.
..................
i'd say your in luck then FelinePersuasion as long as the floss is not made of polyester...but i do highly discourage the use of hair dye, that would be way more expensive , and dangerous if you were to try to only mix a small amount for the floss. Upon reading the mixture instructions that stuff seems kinda unstable to experiment with.
..................
Heck, i say go for the KoolAid . Pennies per experiment and who knows what you'll learn along the way. Incase you are not that adventerous and wish a ''non what if'' answer, try this number 1 -800- 367 -9225
(that is the number on the back of the KooAid Packet) Sometimes if i have a question before buying a product and i'm out in the store shopping, i'll call the 1-800 number on the back of the package while i'm standing in the store isle.
