LadyAzeret -> RE: Coping with Pain without Meds (8/10/2008 12:05:54 PM)

I just ran across this as I was signing in and have to put my two cents in.... I too deal with the pain and fatigue of fibromyalgia. As a Domme, I thought I couldn't  appear vulnerable  (or God forbid-human). It wasn't until I collapsed that I realised how much I was hurting those around me by not letting them know what was going on with my body.

That said here are some things hings that have helped folks with chronic pain: Magnesium malate, MSM, DMSO (personally I'm not found of this idea, but some folks swear by it...). Flax, fish, borage combo for omega oils, and chrondroitin sulfate ( mainly for joint pain).  d-Ribose : it's part of our basic DNA and seems to help a lot with muscle type issues. It's best taken in a powder form.  Any of the aptogenic herbs such as Holy Basil and Rhodiola roseacae are good as well.

Acupuncture has helped me greatly, yes it's expensive and long term. A single treatment will run between $25- $50 a half hour session. Plan on 2-3 sessions a week for a few weeks, then cut down a session a week for a few weeks, eventualyy routine maintnance at once every month or so. There are clinics (especially through teaching schools) where the cost may be less. Be sure they treat the main points on a consisitant basis & only change the auxilary points. (Consistant treatment should show consistant improvemnet after about 6 treatments.) If you find an acupucturist who works with Chines herbs as well you've struck gold! (Warning: some of the formulas taste like crap, but they do wonders!)

Chiropractic also is helpful. Find one who does cranial -sacral and kinesiology as well- not just a quick twist & crack.Again the good ones are expensive, but they are the ones who will take the time to teach the body to heal itself. (See the time factors for acupuncture.) The compensation for cost of either modality is well worth it when you consider lees, or no meds, less time loss from work, QUALITY OF LIFE and functionality. I found the best thing is to try to budget ahead by cutting back on extras like toys, fast food, smokes, caffeine, nights out, cable ,even play parties...In the long run it is so worth it.

I am so disappointed in "Western alleopathic medicine". I believe in intregrative therapies of all sorts. Most impotant is the holistic of approach of all the sytems (micro & macro) are interrelated and interdependant. We each are unique individuals & what works for one may be the worst therpay for another....beware of cookie cutter therapies of any kind.

DISCLAIMER: Each body is different and responds differently, if you have someone who knows kinesiology or muscle testing that can check what works for you it helps, otherwise only add one new supplement , or treatment, a month to see how your body reacts. I am not a medical practitioner, just a student of life.

OK: so maybe I put more than two cents worth in , but maybe it helps someone. I am passionate about living life to it's fullest and unintentional pain really interferes with that!

I am sorry you are suffering candy.  Do you know why you are in pain?  That may be part of the answer because one type or cause of pain requires different things than another.  A pain clinic is very expensive and that seems to be a major issue for you.  Have you tried any sliding scale fee clinics?  Also the phamacy or doctor can help you with the expense of some medications or give them to you for free.  Just do a search on free medications or something along those lines.  Some will give you from one month to a year's supply.

Muscle relaxers can be helpful.  There is one... Robaxin or something like that or it's generic... methocarbamol, is very inexpensive!  You can also get it in a dose of two pills, rather than one and can take it in lower doses if that works for you.

From what you are saying, you are in narcotic type pain, but they are not working for you.  Therefore a pain clinic would be the best place to start, but you may have already done that.  If you haven't go... find a way to have someone help you pay for it.  If you have, try another one.  Sometimes it is the doctor who makes the difference.  You may need a mix of different medications.  I don't know that walmart has any real pain reliever on their four dollar list.  I think they have some mild things, but nothing that will help and they will most likely just rot your gut.

I am on a narcotic, but need a stronger one as I have been on the same one for seven years.  I have tried just about every thing in exersize, lifestyle, etc to deal with it all.  Moderation is important, not pushing and not laying down and never moving again.  A hot tub is amazing for relief for my fibro symptoms.  Massage too is something that will have me walking after not being able to.  If I knew more about where your pain is and such, I might have some helpful hints, but would need to think about it after knowing what is going on.  For me... I use a pain medication and then an hour later will take a half dose of muscle relazer.  I use aspercream sparingly when I have pushed or the weather gets me.  You can't use that all the time and for me it would be dangerous, but once in a while, you just have to have some help.

Hang in there!

DominaYork -> RE: Coping with Pain without Meds (8/10/2008 1:49:24 PM)

I have EDS and on one of the EDS boards I read there is an ongoing debate about pain medications. Now, mind you, this is a different kettle of fish from most chronic pain issues so take this with a grain of salt. The debate is two sided, those on Rx pain meds and those that swear going on them makes things worse. The ones not on meds are saying that it lowers the pain tolerance level and makes it an uphill climb to stronger and stronger meds. Since this isn't a condition that can be fixed, treated or that will ever go away...who knows. Right now I try very hard not to take anything because if I can't feel if a joint is unstable I fall more. When things are rough I pop too many motrin (works WAY better than tylenol for body pain!) and mix it was other OTC pain pills. However, there have been days when I sat, frightened to move becuase everything was dislocating, or days like after I fall down the steps when everything hurts too much to move I wish I had a Rx for something strong. I'm considering going to the doc about it and not being so proud and stubborn but the idea of pain tolerance levels dropping does worry me.

I think Lady Azeret brought up a wonderful point too about being Domina with a chronic condition. I'm hiding nothing. Any sub males I play with will be fully aware of some of what I go through. I expect them to be willing to offer an arm to stablize me or help me if I'm being clumsy, or that if I choke while eating or fall down it's normal. I expect them to know I can be fragile and act accordingly. That doesn't make me less of a Domina by any means and I would hope I can find subs that respect the candor and honesty, as well as the trust offered in exchange for their trust given.

Soaking in warm epsom salt baths are helpful - about 1/2 cup to 1 cup full per bathtub, depending on size.   Working on mental attitude, glass "half full" sort of thing....  Understanding that chronic pain itself can cause damage (google: neuroplasticity), so I accepted the narcotics for a while to give my nervous system time to heal and rebuild, but worked to reduce them whenever I could.  I'm now at less than 1/4 the original dose.

Diet can make a big difference.  I've been on a glutenfree diet for nearly 5 years.  I've also come to recognize items like tomatoes and sunflower seeds, though I'm not allergic to them, will increase my pain level and cause depression symptoms.  Elimination diet and food journals are useful.

Can't underestimate the power of quality sleep.   Do what you can to make it a priority.   Accept free massages, footrubs, etc where you can get them.

Here's a weird thing....  Violent wands feel incredibly wonderful to me.  The longest painfree periods I've had in the last 7 years are from the times I was lucky enough to play with those.  Can't afford one though...sigh...

Candy:

Find a good Palliative Specialist in your area, they will combine Western and Alternitive Medicine.

Did your Pain Specialist try nerve blocks ? There has been some very good success managing Fibromyalgia pain with nerve blocks. This in conjunction with Long acting opioids and short acting for the breakthrough pain is the Gold Standard for Fibro.

Did any of the pain Specialists give you methadone ? Great drug for Fibro pain and very cheap. About 15 dollars for a months supply.

Smoke pot.  I survived through three weeks of intense pain last year from a herniated disc in my neck that impinged my spinal cord with no pain meds other than weed.  It was quite effective and natural.

SavageFaerie -> RE: Coping with Pain without Meds (8/21/2008 7:52:46 AM)

Hi Candy,

My sister lives im chronic pain due to RA, like you she really doesnt like using narcotics unless absolutly necessary. She had considered going on disability from work when the dr recommend Remiciade (sp) treatments. She goes twice a month. She told me its like very low dose chemotherapy basically, but it does cut the intense pain. She also sees a physical therapist who treats the most painfuly parts of her bodyat the time and has actupuncture. Fortunately she has pretty decent insurance and still works full time.

I have pain from time to time due to muscle injury and if Im lucky the dr will give me a muscle relaxer to help, doesnt alaways work as the only one I have found is Soma and due to the type oh mental drugs I take they hesitate to combine, The  anti antianxiety meds  (xanax) I take does also help relieve some muscle pain as its allows them to relax a bit. Other than that its naproxin or advil or tylenol.
I would love to go the holostic way but medicare doesnt pay that I dont beleive. So mostly I just set my mind to try and ignore it, I know its there and just keep going.  Im not sure if you have my number or not but msg me on the other side if you need support, seeing neither of us work now. My phone never rings and Im always home so its no bother.

hugs and kisses

Sage ( from the other parts of the world)

edited to correct what my fingers ignored what my brain was saying, beware, Im sure there are still mistakes LOL)

One of the things that will turn you into an alcoholic...

I was on some strong pain meds and learned that one drink would do the same trick even if it was cheap alcohol.

Once I lost my health insurance it was the best route for me. But now I'm just "dealing" to prove to myself I'm not an addict.

sweetpea29 -> RE: Coping with Pain without Meds (8/24/2008 7:41:19 PM)

toradol can't be used for more than a week at a time, it's mainly for swelling from surgery

look for a homiopathic type dr maybe

what kind of pain?  losing 80 pounds made my back pain MUCH better

tweedydaddy -> RE: Coping with Pain without Meds (9/26/2008 4:13:26 PM)

get a tens unit, if you need to watch the cash, get one from ebay, they cost buttons to run and they are very good. if you have OTC painkillers take them with coke or cold coffee as the caffiene will enhance the effect and speed it up, Ibuprofen for example works twice as fast with coffee as with water.
Hot water bottles can soothe pain massively, especially on your back.
A hot bath or shower can ease pain, especially where lactic acid is concerned.
I have massive spinal pain a few days a week, I get Daddy to sit astride my back and use his body weight to rock me up and down in a riding motion, it works, but the kids think we are fucking, which is always funny, chance would be a fine thing when they are home.
They have some odd ideas about sex, they think Mum and Dad laugh a lot and do it fully dressed.

knockonmyduir -> RE: Coping with Pain without Meds (9/27/2008 5:55:40 PM)

i've had chronic pain in both shoulders from small tears.....nothing worked for me except Vioxx which is no longer (sadly) on the market. Toradol was effective for abit but was really hard on my stomach.  so now i just live with...yoga does help to relax.....i think i've taught myself to 'surf' the pain rather that drown in it...but if you're having trouble sleeping there's valarian root....an herbal sleep aid.....it may help.
good luck!
