LadyHibiscus -> Happy Birthday to My Grandmother! (11/19/2005 9:59:32 AM)

Today is my grandmother Carmela's 97th birthday! I am grateful to say that she is in excellent health, gets around under her own steam, and takes an interest in life. She has some vascular dementia, and needs to hang on to someone for longer walks, but is far too vain to use a cane. Being pushed around the mall in a wheelchair TOTALLY suits our little Italian Queen, though!

If anyone doubts that dominance is genetic, all they have to do is take a look at our little ball of fire. My grandfather called her "boss". 'Nuff said!

I can't say that life with her has been a picnic. She is not one of the world's good or kind people. I can only speculate what our lives would have been like if my grandfather had lived longer. (he died in 1968, when I was a child).

Carmela's long standing goal is to be on the Today show, where they show the centenarians. Tune in in another three years.............

Ms Francine

How nice that you still have a grandparent in your life. Mine have been gone for years. My maternal grandmother was always very indulgent with me. Fond memories.

I just found out that I'm going to be a grandmother for the first time, next June! And I want to be the kind of grandmother to this child that my grandmother was to me.

I miss you, Grandma!

Happy Birthday, Grandma Carmela!

Love,
chymes

Happy birthday Grandma Camella! i love old people..they generally carry the wisdom of the years~
its funny when we are young, we feel that we know it all..so wise...we want our voice to be heard...

but sometimes, looking in an old persons eyes....they dont have to say a thing..and you can see the real knowing....

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Happy Birthday to My Grandmother! (11/19/2005 2:18:11 PM)

Congratulations, chymes! I love being the auntie to my friends' grandkids!

How wonderfuly cool ! It has long been my opinon that E/each of U/us owes it to T/thoes around U/us ( like O/our children) as well as to O/ourselves, to embrace the wisdom and soul of the generation before U/us.
Oh sure , O/our world has become highly populated , parking spaces fewer, and pharmacy lines like way longer.....(just messin' w/ Y/ya there!) Seriously, think of how much the world had gained with modern meds and new discoveries daily on behalf of the senior citizen population ! The generations before U/us have enriched O/our lives with passing on of family traditions, first hand knowledge of historic events , one on one accounts of the way things really happened inso that history doesn't have to repeat it's self. Handed down recipes from the 'old country' so that W/we can always have a taste of O/our roots, some thoes wonderful dishes have filled O/our homes w/ the most awesome aromas of O/our childhoods. Its amazing how much longer the avarage lifespan is from say 100 years ago, ( i believe then it was like 50 years old maybe less) and the world is a better place for it. ( i have to chuckle when i think of a Master at say 100 years old performing Shibari on His collar of say oh about 97 ? 98 years old maybe) But overall in my view there is no sweeter site than that of a couple in their 80's or 90's strolling in the park, down the street or just resting on a bench, holding hands and still in love after 60 , 70 years together. Well with all that having been said, i will close this off with the following...~Happy Happy Birthday to YOU, Lady Hibiscus' Grandmother Carmela~ and You can bet Your pantaloons i'll be tuned into the Today show in 3 ! !...Thank You Lady Hibiscus for sharing Your awesome family news i think its way cool !

Enjoy her while you can. I lost my Gmother this year, she was 105 and still sharp mentally. Imiss her every day.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Happy Birthday to My Grandmother! (11/20/2005 4:23:34 PM)

105! How astounding. Right now the wild one has misplaced her wedding ring and a fashion ring that she wore on the same finger.........so I will say that her mind is not 100%.........but neither is mine, heaven knows!

Happy belated birthday to your grandmother! I got my fire from mine as well, though it was probably good for both of us that my mom got the cool, calm, and collected side of my grandfather.

Your grandmother sounds like a real role model. I hope to be vain up until the end, too!

Best wishes for good health and many more birthdays.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Happy Birthday to My Grandmother! (11/22/2005 2:58:50 AM)

WOW! What a wonderful post and insightfull message. It's great to know that all of us has a chance to a good healthy life where we can keep all the fries in our happy meals. Out of curiosity, has your Grandmother been to the CM website to read the B-Day message?

Take care and I wish you the best in being even more healthier than your Grandmother when you hit 97. By then, perhaps you'll have some grand children or great grand children posting a Happy Birthday to you on a web site.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Happy Birthday to My Grandmother! (11/22/2005 8:42:04 AM)

My grandmother doesn't read English, but she appreciates sucking up! Demands, it actually........... <G>

I am not a breeder, and while that is a right decision for me, I do think often about the fact that I won't have a daughter/granddaughter to take care of me when or if I live to be old. But, breeding them doesn't guarantee they will care about you, right?

It's very true. I learned that when I use to be a CNA for a nursing home. Anyhow, making the decission not to have kids nor adopt is not wrong. It's just a choice that I and most people can and should respect.
I'm sure you've learned a few lessons from your grandmother and can see yourself following some of her good examples. By being able to do that, I'm sure you'll find many ppl in the world who will care a great deal about you.
