NakedOnMyChain -> Hoping for the Best (11/20/2005 2:06:46 AM)

Well, I'm off to Minnesota for a few days, maybe longer (at 8:00 this morning). My Mom is really sick, and we haven't been able to get any help at all anywhere in Indiana, so we're heading to Mayo Clinic. I'm hoping and praying that everything will be all right. My Mom's a trooper, but painkillers and other medicine isn't helping at all. She's had about four surgeries in the past few months, and not only did they not help, they might have made things worse since the doctors have no clue what's really wrong. If any of you pray, please do. Otherwise, feel free to wring your hands, wish on a star, meditate, etc. It will be greatly appreciated. This is kind of a last resort, and I'm lucky that I haven't started my new job yet, so I have time to go with her. I guess that's about it. I won't be able to read this until I get back, so thank you all in advance.

My thoughts and prayers are with you! I spent a year and a half in a nightmare of medical issues (and mounds of bills!) and then finally went to Mayo Clinic myself. They found out that I had a misdiagnosis and that all the medication, etc. had just made a small problem into a huge problem that cost me a year of work and $42,000 in medical bills. So, I think the place is a wonderful place, the people who work there are very knowledgable and kind, and it was a very positive experience for me. I hope you and your mother have the same great experience there and that she is on her way to feeling much better by the time you read this!

Thank you all for the kind wishes and prayers. I got back very late last night after what can only be called an ordeal. I'm not going to elaborate (it goes into very personal territory), but nothing was solved or made better. It was kind of a crushing blow to my family.

Anyway, thank you all, it really means a lot to me. I needed the support, and I truly appreciate it.

I'm sorry things weren't worked out for your mom.

May the goddess be with you during this time.

krikket -> RE: Hoping for the Best (11/25/2005 9:53:25 AM)

i'm sorry to hear about your mom's illness. my heart goes out to all of you. It's incredinbly difficult not beinhg able to put your finger on what exactly is needed to make her better.

I'm not sure how much You know about the Mayo Clinic, but i speak from experience that it's a marvelous place (i hate calling it a clinic or hospital because those words are much to mundane for it). Everyone there -- aides, nurses, doctors, interns, dietitian, are all there to help your mom and to help you. They understand, as few places do, that the entire family should be involved with the patient, their treatment, and the staff.l It's absolutely remarkable, hon.

i'll keep both of you in my prayers....and send you a great big hug....

All good thoughts to you and your family---------I am and have been in those situations, so I can relate.

You are allowed to have ALL the whatever you want, as long as it's not a cigarette. And feel free to vent at any time----you are entitled.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Our family had a very disappointing experience with Mayo as well. I'm sure it's a wonderful place and deserving of its rep, but I think they see a lot of "last resort", hopeless, or misdiagnosed cases and it's probably made the staff a little cold. I had a brother-in-law go in with a very difficult case and they gave him the worst possible prognosis, and didn't sugar-coat it, or really offer out any hope or optimism. In the end he sought treatment at the Cleveland Clinic near him and he did quite a bit better than the Mayo folks predicted.

Best to you & your Mom.
