softpjOS -> laryngitis (8/12/2008 11:14:03 AM)

For many that know me, this is actually a blessing and they are secretly hoping it doesn't go away. [8|] But, for me... it's been nothing but pure frustration and starting to get a bit depressing...[:(]

July 12 was the last day I could talk without sounding like kermit.  Yup, a month today.  Started off sounding like kermit and today I sound like the soundtrack to kermit and minny having sex... good grief.

Started off with a raspy voice on the 13th following a very late night sitting around a bonfire.  Cool night air typically leaves me a bit hoarse the next day, add all the laughing, *shouting* across the yard....  Sunday morning found me with a bit of a sore throat and hoarse.

Monday had to put my beloved cat to sleep.  He was almost 14 so this was a very bad day for me indeed.  Lots of crying, some yelling (some days just go from bad to worse...), did i mention LOTS of crying?

Tuesday i could barely speak above a whisper...

Toss in a heated arguement on Wednesday, way too much talking for an already stressed voice mix in a healthy dose of yelling and you have.. A triple play on straining your voice in less then a week!

Every search tells me to rest my voice, don't talk, whispering (which is ALL i can do) is much worse on it.  Sure, maybe if i lock myself away in a closet and stop interacting with anyone that would be possible.   I mean come on, it's been a flipping month!!  I've been trying to not talk, have attended functions with dry erase board in tow but even the best effort finds me talking here and there.

So last friday i broke down and went to the doctor.  Ok this bozo says i have "Pharyngitis" along with a sinus infection as well as both ears infected.  Ok, i can definately believe the sinus and ear infection but pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis is what every day people call a "sore throat".  Duh!  But as i explained to him, my thoat is only sore if i try to talk too much.  Otherwise no pain at all from it.  So, i'm leaning more towards laryngitis.  Aka stupid pj syndrome. lol.

Have done this before, football games, too much yelling/cheering.  Hey, i'm a football mom what can i say?  lol.

In some instances, it has refused to go away on it's own. (like this) and the doctors have resorted to giving me prednisone.... something i have decided i will never ever take again.  Can we say Hard Limit??  Oh hell no!

So, i'm wondering what "home cures" are out there that i haven't tried yet.  Have done the gargle with warm salt water, drank some really nasty green tea with honey and lemon, otc throat spray, drinking/eating cold stuff ie sherbert, juices, lots of water...  as well as having a dry erase board attached to me at all times.  Hard to use dry erase for a phone call, although i am getting REAL good at texting people instead of answering phone calls...

Today is day 4 of antibiotics, and my voice *test* today showed no signs of any improvement...... doctor said if it's not back by the time i finish the 10 days of meds...... *insert ominous music* steriod time.

Thinking i'll be in an institution for the insane before the meds are finished.... especially if one more person finds it funny to hide my dry erase marker!!!!  Add in taking away my caffiene (coffffffeeeeeeee) because the antibiotics say to cease caffiene during treatment AND i've scaled wayyyyyyyyy back on smoking.  Someone is gonna die!

Help?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Pineapple juice.
I am not kidding...it really works.

Did he scope you?  It sounds like you may have a polyp on your vocal fold.  If he only looked down the throat it may be necessary to have the full scope so they can see both sides of the folds.  If it is indeed a polyp you have a few options...speech therapy , complete vocal rest or even surgery.  I suggest you go to an ENT specifically.  If you email me on the other side I may have a good recommendation for you.  I wish you much luck.  Drink more water than you think you need and simply be quiet...hard, I know, but necessary to get your strength back.

Be well

red, the last time it lasted this long they did do a scope and found nothing.  Thinking keeping my yap shut is my only real solution, hard as it may be.

Thank you both for answering

Hello PJ...I'm happy to hear your doc scoped you!  It is so important to have all the info.  I might suggest some speech therapy to help prevent this from happening again.  You might try gargling with organic apple vinegar....it will help with the swelling of the vocal folds.

May you be screaming at a football game soon!!!!

Day 32.....

Three days of antibiotic left and i still can't say more then a couple of sentences before my voice cracks and/or starts changing pitch.....  [:o]

i'm also beginning to resemble a pineapple[8|]

Time to go back to the ENT.  Sometimes this can be caused by GERD, other times it could be a polyp.  If you shout a lot normally (say at your football games) you could be setting up a chronic problem.

lasted 39 days.  Voice came back last friday, just before my birthday :)  The day after the doctor said he was calling in the dreaded prescription or sending me to an ENT for a scope.  Dodged the bullet on both [:)]

still taking it easy since i certainly don't want to overuse it and find myself back to square one but i can talk again!!  Without sounding like kermit [:)]

Pineapple juice works because it contains an enzyme that digests human flesh.
It strips the damaged tissue away and cauterises the underlying infection.

Well thank goodness she got her voice back... over a month ago.
