Im considering trying to set up a home network between my laptop and my desktop....both already have network interface cards installed. Do I just run an ethernet cable between the two or do I have to have something or other in between, some sort of a router/hub/whatever?

Pick up a cheap router, it will make sharing the internet connection easier, as it won't depend on pc or the other being turned on for the other to share...

They are really easy to setup.

If you run an ethernet cable directly between them it needs to be a crossover cable (you should be able to find them at your local computer store, and they will be labeled as such).

To simply connect the two computers using regular ethernet cables, a small ethernet network switch is all that is needed. If you want to connect laptop and PC to a common Internet connection (DSL or cable modem), look for a Cable Modem/DSL Router.

I personally like the Netgear line, and would recommend the RP614, which you can get at Best Buy as well as any computer store. It has a 4-port switch built in, so it will connect your laptop and your PC quite nicely. If your laptop does wireless and you want to go that way, get the WGR614 instead.

I've actually been told by my computer guru (since I'm about 3 months away from setting up a gigantor home network after a big remodel) that an Xbox360 is a very useful adjunct to a home network...largely for wireless video among other things.

(Don't actually know...ask me in 3 months).

No xboxes in this house...no video game consoles of any kind actually.....but thanks for the idea!

The only internet connection available here is dialup, and for some reason the dialup is extreamly slow on the laptop compared to the desktop.....both supposedly have a 56K modem...although it shows its running at about 44K on both of them...The laptop will do wireless I think, but I havent tried it for wireless internet because we dont have a working battery so I havent driven it anywhere there is actually wireless available to even try...lol...

I did FINALLY get all the drivers downloaded and everything is working great (so far!)

Get yourself a small ethernet switch, connect both laptop and PC to the switch, and enable Internet Connection Sharing on the PC. Then both computers can use the dialup on the PC.
