ORIGINAL: ghitaPVH Im considering trying to set up a home network between my laptop and my desktop....both already have network interface cards installed. Do I just run an ethernet cable between the two or do I have to have something or other in between, some sort of a router/hub/whatever? If you run an ethernet cable directly between them it needs to be a crossover cable (you should be able to find them at your local computer store, and they will be labeled as such). To simply connect the two computers using regular ethernet cables, a small ethernet network switch is all that is needed. If you want to connect laptop and PC to a common Internet connection (DSL or cable modem), look for a Cable Modem/DSL Router. I personally like the Netgear line, and would recommend the RP614, which you can get at Best Buy as well as any computer store. It has a 4-port switch built in, so it will connect your laptop and your PC quite nicely. If your laptop does wireless and you want to go that way, get the WGR614 instead.
