Level -> "A .bin file is missing" (8/16/2008 4:08:20 PM)

Or so says my freebie AVG antivirus program.

(A) I don't know what a .bin file is, or why it should be missing.

(B) WTF?

I tried to run an update, it wouldn't do it. Looked in the Help section, found none. Should I just re-install the mess?

Any clues, oh pc-literate ones? [:D]

Disregard my question. I just researched this. There is a problem with AVG today. I am sure they are working on it and there will be an update to correct it. If you would like some advise on AV software, avast.com has a free software for home users that I like much more than AVG. When customers need a total security package I provide them with a CD that includes Avast Home among other well researched and tested products.

Ps, you're a good man; thank you, my friend. [;)]

Reinstalling the program won't hurt you.  AVG uses alot of bin files, so determining which it is from this end would be next to impossible.  .bin files are binary files, usually used to store data, but they are a universal file type (many uses and purposes).

Hope that helps a bit,
Thadius

Thanks for the help, Dolf. I used Avast a couple of years ago, then switched over; I may look at them again.

Just one more quick note, most of the big cable ISPs offer a complete security package which include the full blown versions of anti virus software, it may be worth looking at your ISP providers site, as these suites are usually free.

Thanks for the help, Thadius; I'm going to sit on it till morning, give them time to give it a thorough geeking, see if that fixes it.

Not with Verizen DSL.  RUN!!!!    the free is for 3 uses- then it is an extra "monthly" charge- and to add to this the cleaner messed up my computer.  of my 3 computers- the only one I tried it on- is now on the brink.    [the 2 that I did not clean are fine]

I hate modern business practices.

If you know the name of the missing .bin file you can also type it into Google (or whatever search engine you use).  Sometimes you can download that single file.

I started using Avast around the time I started playing World of Warcraft.  Avast tends to pick up more of the WoW-specific keyloggers than AVG, McAfee, Norton, etc. which is what sold me on them.

In two years I have yet to get a single piece of icky virus material past it, so I give it a thumbs up.  [:D]

The best thing about Avast is when it tells me my database has been updated. I've always wanted a talking computer. It’s a bit scary when you are listening to music though and you don’t expect an American to jump in your ear.
