LotusSong -> Tattooing post mortem (8/19/2008 8:25:20 PM)

I had my permanent eyeliner touched  up after 14 months.  I've been through the procedure 4 times.  This last time was different.  My eyelids swelled a bit as normal.. but I was totally exausted out the next day, sort of like sleeping off a hangover.  It's like my body went into shock or something.   My under eyes accumulated fluid for a day.. and the shadows are pronounced.  It's fading day by day and getting back to normal.. but can any of your tattoo artists explain what  cause my physical reaction?  I know my endorphins wore out by the last lid.  Maybe adrenaline overload?

Dehydration is something that folks often overlook...tattooing is a trauma to the organism.

Although it wouldn't have surprised me to see a necro body art thread here before it got 'snuffed' by the mods...

Tattooing can sometimes cause a drop in blood sugar levels, depending on the person.  I've typically heard of it happening with larger tattoos, but if your levels were a touch off to begin with that day, the sudden increase in adrenaline could have screwed with it in such a way to make them go "woosh!"

I recommend sucking on a hard candy or something like that next time just in case.  Could be a fluke, but candies are delicious anyway and it's certainly better than a repeat performance of feeling like poop.

Also~ I've been looking into permanent makeup, especially the eyeliner.  How is the pain for you?  Would you recommend it to someone else?

*snorts coke on the pc monitor through my nose laughing*

I read the title of the Op and imagined it was about something else.

Can't say exactly what I envisioned..let's just say if it had, the Op would have violated a phrase in the TOS.

Last year when I initially had it done, I had is posted in my on line journal here.  I've since deleted it and now wish I hadn't :)  The eyeliner isn't done like you normally would do it.  It's a line along the base of the lashes and is more of an embellishment.  It's subtle but effective.  I asked her (my tech) to thicken it a bit and it takes just a touch but it's still thinner than what I would normally do.  The pic I have with my longer hair are my eyes lined with liquid liner.  The pic with my short hair is the permanent liner.

They use a topical anesthetic cream/ointment but it does not eliminate pain, it only softens it a bit.  I had it done by electric needle.  There is a method where it is done by manual needle but it is so light, it's not worth the pain :)

Your lids will swell but not to the point where you can't see.  They get puffy and red.  This last about 4-7 days the complete healing is in 2 weeks.

My eyes seem to go through the following stages:
Right afterward, very red lids at the liner line (I love that they hand you a mirror and ask "How do you like it"?  LOL  I just told them I image it will be fine when the swelling goes down)

Go home- put a bag of frozen peas or a bean bag-type ice pack over your eyes.  Take an antihistamine to help speed the reduction of the swelling.  No eye makeup for 3 days.

The next day the area under your eyes is dark

The day after that- bags with fluid form as the swelling goes down.

Day four.. your eyes look "tired" but the bags are gone.

Do NOT freak out.. it'll go back to normal.  I do use an organic dye as it gradually lightens over the year.  The line will look croocked a bit but that is from thw swellin.   Just be patient.. trust your tech.

After that you are pretty much home free.  As to "is it worth it".. yes.. after all is said and done it's a wonderful time-saver and does look good and you don't have to do touch up during the day.  All I wear is mascara on my eyes.  Is it painful? HELL YES!!!!!  (especially when they get to the inside of your lids)

So next time- I'll drink a lot of water.. take my antihistamine first, eat a meal and I'm thinking of going to my  doctor and ask for a good numbing cream for this as my tech said that there are better out there but she is not licensed to use it.

Last year I went back 4 times to get it the way I wanted it.  Each time was easier.  (two to four week intervals).  I didn't have the reaction that I did this time.  This time I also got nauseous just about the time she was finishing.

Lileth -> RE: Tattooing post mortem (8/24/2008 10:59:59 AM)

I'd consider having that done, just would make sure the conditions were right.
