ORIGINAL: Leonidas

...It is a very efficient environment for keeping me quiet, and consuming, thus feeding the machine of which I have become a part. The only trouble is, I was never built to live here...

Or perhaps you were. Perhaps the human WAS designed to evolve as it has and will continue to do.
quote:

...I still have the brain, and muscle, and sinew, and will, of a hunter-gather. I am still, unaltered, man. I am built to lift a spear, and hunt the mammoth that could easily kill me with a toss of its head. I am built for a world full of savage, dangerous forces, both within and without, that I must overcome to survive. I am built for a world that still holds mystery, and wonder...

Or perhaps you were built with this evolution in mind and you are exactly what and where you are meant to be in that evolution. Of course, this all depends on the reality of man's arrival and purpose on earth; not on your personal belief about said arrival and purpose.

quote:

...The general perception of BDSM, or D/s, or the little sub-culture to which I belong is that it's "kinky", unnatural, strange. Is it? Could it be that what we do is, in some small way, seeking ourselves again? Are we groping around trying to find the savagery, and power, and mystery, and wonder, and danager, for which we are built, but that is no longer to be found in our lives?...

Ahhh, the crux of the matter. Ever see the movie "Altered States?" I have witnessed, as a response to BDSM "play," a submissive retreating to, or releasing, (depending upon your perspective), his instinctive, animalistic self. It may be interesting to note that this state usually occurs as a result of sensory overload or deprivation. I have felt within Myself primal urges strengthened by the same "play." On My part, those primal urges come about as a result of being in control of and harnessing the animal within the submissive and Myself.

I have a possible theory, similar to what you proposed in your post: Humans, evolving to this current state, have indeed become numb. Everything we could want or need is available at the touch of a button or turn of a knob, (except possibly that elusive thrall, although computer technology DOES make that search easier). Some may "escape" technological overload by sailing rough seas, driving too fast on curving mountain roads, skydiving, hiking, etc.. I escape within My comfortable, structured environment through BDSM "play."

However, this theory of Mine could be blown completely out of the water. Humans have sought altered states for centuries, through the use of drugs, alcohol and probably BDSM, amongst other things. Maybe what it is that we do is simply another product of the human mind's wondrous ability to think, create and imagine. (Something no other animal, fish or bird has been proven able to do to the extent that humans do.)

A very well thought out and intelligent reply. Thank you. I think that we probably are evolving toward a state where we can only survive in the man-made world that we have created. For example, children with extreme food alergies who would have died in infancy a century ago are living to adulthood now, and possibly passing their frailties along. There are many other examples. It could well be that in a few hundred more generations we will be absolutely dependant on technology to survive as a species at all. Some disruption in the comfy, man made world of some future generation could well cause a mass extinction of our species just as the adaptations of other species that suddenly became maladapted when the environment changed caused the same in the past.

As I have said elsewhere, the law of unintended consequences can make what seems wise today fatally foolish in hindsight.
