MissIsis -> Libertarian vs Green Party (8/23/2008 6:46:02 AM)

Is there anyone that knows the actual differences between these two parties?  What positive influences each can bring, & what negatives?

What do each stand for the most? the least?

I have to go to work soon, but I am interested in reading any responses when I get home.

If only there was a way one could search the internet and read about these sort of things.............

       Ok.  The super-quick, hyper-simplified synopsis...

Democrats will give a man a fish.  Republicans will teach a man to fish.  Socialists (Greens) think the government needs to own the fishing fleet, the procressing plants, and the trucks that distribute fish-based protein product.  Libertarians might put up a sign that says "this way to the ocean."

Purely my opinions...

Libertarian philosophy sounds appealing... on paper.
In practice, the Libertarian Party has focused less on making the paper model workable in real life, and more on chasing off even faintly viable candidates such as Ron Paul, in favor of seriously flawed, and basically laughable figures like Badnarik or Barr.

I don't have a link, but I seem to remember that Badnarik was not the one that most delegates wanted, but he became their choice after the others deadlocked at convention...showing that the LP is not so much a new model for politics, as it is business as usual with outcasts filling the roles.

Before the 2000 elections, I was taking part in several actions for farmworkers in the capitol of a large and populous state, and we ended up sitting through a bunch of Green party meetings to present our points at the end.

While the Green members seemed less tin-foil-hat than the LPs, I couldn't help but notice that their platform was unremarkable... 'Ralph Nader is for Education!!' has stuck with me.  Ever seen a presidential candidate come out and claim that education should be done away with?   No, they are all for education, while making sure that the schools produce hordes of ill educated and easily misled future voters.  And nothing in the Green  ideology described a means of fixing education, just an assurance that their guy was 'for' it.

And Nader himself has impressed me not at all ever since he wrote that tell all book to get revenge for not getting a promotion when he was an auto industry executive.

The poorly named Constitution Party is just a front for extreme right wing fundies.

At the end of the day, all of the 'independent' 3rd parties are just wanting business as usual..only with them enjoying the corruption of power, from being put in charge of your lives and money.

Obviously, if that was the kind of answer I wanted, I would have done that & let it be.  I have already done that & continue to do so.  I had been hoping for some more indepth opinions, & maybe even inside knowledge about what one could expect from these two partied.

To those who have seriously answered my post already, thank you.

I am really at a loss for who to vote for this time around.  All I know is that no one can be worse than what we have had in our White House for the past 8 years.

There is extremely little chance of either Green or Libertarian winning the White House any time soon. Libertarians would try to reduce government to miniscule dimensions, and the Greens would do the opposite. As things stand, they can only hope to exert some influence on the two dominant parties.

Richard Hofstadter's dictum from The Age of Reform is still true: "Third parties are like bees: once they have stung, they die."

Perhaps.

Even so, I should add that I encourage anyone believing in the ideas of either party to vote for them, win or not.

Raechard -> RE: Libertarian vs Green Party (8/23/2008 10:04:08 AM)

The libertarian's sound like the militant wing of the green party. To me.

Jeffff -> RE: Libertarian vs Green Party (8/23/2008 10:06:44 AM)

I disagree, the Libertarians  want  MUCH less government, theoretically

By deffinition the Green Party would require more legislation

How so?

Raechard -> RE: Libertarian vs Green Party (8/23/2008 10:14:40 AM)

In the same way Walmartarians are the militant wing of Walmart.[8|]

DomKen -> RE: Libertarian vs Green Party (8/23/2008 11:31:45 AM)

In a nutshell The Libertarian party is a weird conglomeration of anti taxers, potheads and, recently, far right wingers looking for an established party to take over.

The american Green Party is based on the European Green parties. Progressives and environmentalists primarily. Despite some claims above they are a far left party not socialists.

I think not...

It would be one thing if they were viable candidates, they are not, they are marginal. Voting for a marginal candidate may make you feel better but it does nothing substantive. Better to get involved with a candidate that matched best to the thing you believe in the most AND has a chance to win and serve.
