I threw away like 45 bottles of pills and in there was some old expired theraflue stuff. Some of this shit expired clear back in 90, some so recent as 2005, Some of this shit people were still using. my dad doesn't believe you have to throw past expired stuff like mediquick* medical spray for cuts an scrapes* and old expired tylonals out.

So naturally I did all this while nobody was in the house lol, I'll be hiding the pill bag in my bedroom garbage an then throwing it out in the huge black bedroom garvage bag night before trash take out. Ironically bet no one will notice the stuff was gone.

Expired drugs aren't bad per se'.  The problem is....over time they lose their potency and effectiveness.
It goes without saying -- it's always best to use current medications so they work as intended.

not uncommon practice of most. your Dad is right to some degree. medications don't just not work the day after the expiration date., but ummmmm since 1990...yeah best to toss.

YourhandMyAss it would be better if you took the expired med to the recycle or 'dump' yourself as they are still hazarerious waste and need to be desposed of propertily.

painslutpiggy, and how does one dispose of them correctly? How does taking them to where the gargae goes, directly yourself instead of just throwing them in a  can an them going there anyway differ?

YHMA,
i was taught to grind up medications and put them either in a cat litter box or in plants. Apparently there's something in them that will act as good fertilizer for plants. Specifically, birth control pills. The danger in just throwing them away is not being sure where they will end up. God forbid someone should flush them down the toilet, and we'd end up with 5 headed fish and 3 shelled turtles.

how about returning them to the pharmacy where they will happily dispose of them for free in their hazardous waste?  our pharmacy here has an annual "dead drug" roundup once a year with a big advertising blitz to encourage people to dispose of their unwanted drugs safely.  studies in various waterways have shown an alarming level of different type of drugs in the water - usually caused by people flushing the drugs

nursy, even for pills that didn't come from the pharmacy?

nursygirl -> RE: went around purging the house of outdated pills, and wow was there a bunch (8/30/2008 3:54:31 PM)

yes - pills, liquids, sprays - everything

oh taking stuff back to the pharmacy to dispose of is a great idea.  i always wondered what to do with it - going into the ecosystem being a no.

my sister takes cold medicine from 10 years ago.  tsk.

Hell, I just sell them to high school kids. They don't know the difference [8D]

Just remember, it's a lot easier to store a medication you've stopped taking than get a new scrip for it when you need some...

Actually for me it's quite easy. I just tell my doctor I was taking  the med and why I want back on it , and that I'd like to go back onto it, and my doctor will fill out a new subscription. Of course it's not always so easy for every one else.

Everything in the bag was mostly otc's and stuff you can routinely get again very easily like flagyl, or antibiotics.

Even if it's not easy to re get ahold of ,medications from over 9 years ago shouldn't be taken.
