Romney was going to be nominated vice-president. Everything was set up for it. Then at the very last minute, they tell Romney: "Sorry, we've changed our minds, it's going to be Palin instead, she's more photogenic than you, plus she's a brave old normal Christian mum, not a weirdo Mormon like you, bye bye!".

Of course, Romney is a little bit pissed off about that, hence his treacherous volte-face
