As an avid animal lover and active animal rescuer who went down to New Orleans to help the abandoned animals only 3 weeks after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, I was really, really glad to see this news clip.

I hope that the people evacuating the Gulf Coast will know to take their pets with them -- I can't tell you how many animals died from being left in crates, closed-up rooms, or even tied outside of their homes.  It was horrible!  But it looks as though most people are being relatively proactive this time and are taking the threat seriously.

My prayers are with all of the affected areas along the coast -- both for the people and the animals there.

I saw that on the news tonight and am very glad that pets were included in the preparation and planning this time around.

I know that I personally would NOT evacuate if I couldn't take the Girls with me. HEll, I'd try to figure out how the safely get the fish out too (and at least one of my potted plants.. long story about that one).

It's nice to see that the authorities are recognizing that there are many people who WILL NOT under any circumstances leave their furbabies..

Horses and cows cannot be evacuated however unless people have few of them and large enough trailers. The usual practice is to let them out and hope they can find a high place to wait out the rising waters. However, some people don't release them and come back to find them drowned. They can swim for a short time, but not hours.

When the fire season hits out here people do coordinate on moving their horses and cattle to safety if possible.  Sometimes the only choice is to let them loose and hope for the best.

I know a very elderly and ill (currently under chemo treatment) woman who refuses to leave because of her 4 little dogs. I'm worried sick about her and wish that she had someone to take her and the dogs out of the west bank area. Sigh. She is my adopted maw-maw, I can barely watch the news coverage on this.
