JerseyKrissi72 -> Anyone Else Suffer Like This? (9/4/2008 2:47:38 AM)

Since I had my gall bladder removed about 2 years ago I have been suffering with just about anything I eat (dairy products, spicy food, caffeine- related products)..It seems as soon as I eat any of these products I have to rush to the bathroom and I LIVE on pepto for upset stomach, diarrhea or heart burn which I never had a day in my life..is this common? Should avoiding these foods help? Thanks.

I had my gallbladder out in April, but haven't experienced the symptoms you're describing. Have you discussed your symptoms with your physician?

Try taking an enzyme replacement for dairy and beano for the others. They should help with enzymes that seem missing. i dont think this has to do with the surgery. I had gallbladder surgery 12 years ago without any ill effects like these.

I had my gall bladder out by conventional surgery (not that laparascopic shit they do now - LOL) around 17 or so years ago.  For the entire first year, my life was as you describe it.  Suddenly at the end of the first year I noticed things were starting to not bother me so much.  I did return to "normal" pretty quickly at that point.

You need to discuss it with your doctor and see if your system needs a little boost.

I had my gallbladder removed in 1994, by laparoscopic surgery.  I've had many of the same symptoms you've described, but it's nowhere near as severe as it was when I first had the surgery.  But, I still make sure I'm near a restroom for the first half hour after eating, just in case.

Eliminate milk and wheat products from the diet. I had conventional gall bladder surgery 20some years ago and I still have to watch my dairy intake. And I keep Imodium in the house, the purse, the car.

Good evening!
Yes I had the lapro thing about 4 years ago. And now I cannot eat anything really spicy or have to limit what I can eat, like only 1 double cheeseburger or no more donuts or oreos... does not sit well with me anymore. I always have that bottle of generic maalox available and was always running to the bathroom-not good for playing right?
Anyways, I am currenty adding more fiber to my diet, been taking fiber pills. It helped to set me on a schedule where I am not going every single hour. Might wanna try that and change in your diet-you know as we get older we just cannot tolerate things like when we were younger! But certainly mention it to your doctor next time. Worse comes to worse and the do a colonoscopy (hubby and mom just had them done) they put you out for it by an IV, don't even have to be awake anymore. Good luck!
Love,
Zechriel

JerseyKrissi----
Unfortunately, it sounds like you have what somerefer toas'dumping syndrome' which is a rather apt name as you've unfortunately found out.  For some reason, they leave this information out a lot of times when they do the surgery; don't informpeople of the potential risk.  A close friend and my older sis have suffered from this.  It can be permanent.  There are prescription meds that can help, Immodium can also help (Though, the friend I mentioned was eating 5-8 a day and still having issues last I heard).  Definitely call the doctor.  Good luck!

I still have my gall bladder and although I have had some attacks... severe pain that doubles you over, they could find nothing.  I haven't had an attack in years now, but can sometimes feel some slight pain when I haven't had anything to eat.  My doctor said that even the smell of something fatty could set off one of my attacks.  Not sure I believe that one.  Belladonna helped with my attacks.

But... I live every single day with the symptoms you discribe.  I eat, I get sick... thus, I don't eat much!  The only relief I have found is milk comforts me.  My stomach will feel empty even when I have eaten, but it also feels full in a way you can't eat another bite.  It is strange.  I get nausia compared to chemo nausia... live on pepto, gas x and a few unmentionable things.  I sucked limes for the nausia which brought an instant relief but nothing long term.  I am now looking into what is called 'leaky gut'.  Somehow the toxin's in your body are released and often times before a bowel movement and you will get really sick.  There isn't a lot known about it I guess... but it seems to come with all the symptoms you are mentioning.

This stuff is not a just a bother... it can be disabling.  I deal with pain that could knock a horse off it's feet and do not cry and yet that nausia... sometimes will put me in tears.  I really feel for you... it is something that makes you crazy because the doctors think you are neurotic and can't find anything.  I have tried just about every diet change I could and still nothing changes or works.  All I can do is medicate... medicate and pray for answers or the right doctor.  My heart goes out to you... I know what you are talking about.  It sucks!

I worked on a gastro ward for a while and had lots of gall bladder removals, never heard of these symptoms tho, they are usually something that happens before the surgery not after.

probably best to consult your doctor

DavanKael -> RE: Anyone Else Suffer Like This? (10/28/2008 6:20:28 PM)

An afterthought to what I posted.
I read somewhere (Not sure where) that some of the chemicals in diet sodas are causing gall bladders to just 'switch off' which may be part of why it's the most performed surgery in the US.
I've had gall bladder issues for years; jeez, since high school.  I've informed the doctors that they may cut on me when they tell me it will kill me; otherwise, to leave me alone.  I feel for you, Lockit. While my symptoms aren't as bad as yours, when it really gets goin', it is no fun at all.  I hope that things improve for you.
The Belladonna makes sense; I would think it would decrease the systemic motility but just a guess.
Best wishes,
  Davan

Sounds like Ibs.
I've had my gallbladder out, and it helped with those symptoms, but, the Ibs is here to stay.
Read the other poster's symptoms, and that's pretty much me.
I'm always afraid to eat.

Lockit -> RE: Anyone Else Suffer Like This? (10/28/2008 6:42:50 PM)

This is like IBS... but much worse.  I was wondering... does anyone ever feel like they have posion in them... like in the stomach area.... I often think of it as bile... it just feels like it bubbles up and is posion, kind of like warm in a way. (Sorry if this is gross, but having so many of us here... I had to ask) I am seriously considering it might be the 'leaky gut'.  I have seen doctors from one coast to the other...  No answers.. but then it took 36 years to dx one disease and 41 the other... I don't expect much from the medical community seeing as though I had to figure it out and then present it to them.  To think of all I paid them and to have to research for years and find it all myself... I want a refund. lol

Thank you Davan... I will hope you find your answers too and will be blessed with wellness!  The belladonna... whoa... it was amazing... I wish I could still get it because it sure did help.

xxblushesxx--Your quote is from "The Little Prince", isn't it?  One of themost profound books ever.
Lockit--Yeah, when my gallbladder acts up, I do feel "poisoned".  I basically stop eating, then eventually lose my patience with that and makemyself a heaping bowl ofspaghettiwith really acidic sauce.  For some reason, that sometimes knocks things right again; I haven't the foggiest clue why; perhaps the combination of acid and base?

A good friend had this problem as extreme as you have.  She dropped about 30 pounds because she passed everything she ate without being able to get any of the nutritional value from it.  She solved her problem by incorporating a probiotic diet into her life.  She still has to watch certain foods, especially dairy products, but she's gotten her life back.

DesFIP -> RE: Anyone Else Suffer Like This? (10/31/2008 5:20:22 AM)

Wanted to add that the job of the gallbladder is to produce bile which digests fat. Once you no longer have a gallbladder, you have no way to digest fat. Therefore if you eat the same way as before, you will have problems. Bacon cheeseburgers are something I remember fondly but haven't been able to eat in over 20 years. Just too much fat.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Anyone Else Suffer Like This? (10/31/2008 6:39:19 AM)

Lockit: Yes, sometimes I feel that way. Although it may be the Bacardi...[:-]

Davan: Yes, it is. Great book!!! (wish I had written it.)

Des: Good Gawd, you'd think someone would have told me that before now!! Thanks for the info. *sigh*
