Thadius -> Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/4/2008 12:16:23 PM)

Just caught a news blurb, saying that the nielsen ratings show 37.5 million watched the VP nominee deliver her speech last night.

I will post a hard link as soon as one becomes available.

Well, just think - everyone had to see the two-headed monster that the Dems have been so panicked about. She's been all over the news! What wonderful free publicity for the Republicans.

McCain couldn't have played this one better.

How many will watch the guy who has become second in command tonight? I hear his speech is going to clash with the NFL opening game something rotten.

Thadius -> RE: Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/4/2008 12:39:21 PM)

I will be catching the replay of his speech.  As I expect many of us that enjoy football will be doing.  How does that change anything again?

Second in command?  Hardly.

37,244,000 viewers for her speech last night, this only includes numbers from common coverage.

Here's a thumbnail provided by Nielsen:
The Sarah Palin speech generated 37.2 million viewers, just 1.1 million viewers short of Barack Obama's record-breaking speech on Day 4 of the Democratic Convention. The Palin speech was carried on only six networks while the Obama speech was carried on ten (including BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo).
Palin attracted a large female audience (19.5 million women, or 4.9 million more than Day 3 of the Democratic Convention).

Ratings for viewers 55+ (25.2) continue to be about ten times higher than for teens (2.2)
Day 3 for the GOP attracted more Hispanic viewers (1.4 million) than Day 3 of the Democratic Convention (1.2 million), even though Univision and Telemundo did not carry the speech.

I'm on the other side of the aisle, but I think it's great that so many folks tuned in. It shows they're taking an interest in our civic life.

eta:

It also shows an admirable American trait--the desire to see/learn things for oneself, rather than rely on secondhand reports.

Agreed.  This is a good thing for the civic health of the country.

Whatever else one may say about this election, it's not dull! [:)]

bipolarber -> RE: Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/4/2008 12:52:02 PM)

Hardly surprising. When you foist a total unknown onto your base, and shock the country with a complete neophyte as your pick for the second most powerful job in the world, people are bound to be curious. Especially since virtually no one knew a damned thing about her a week ago! (...and the McCain campaign had her under wraps to the press, to make sure she didn't say anything stupid in the meantime) Honestly, you're surprised about this number?

As opposed to a neophyte as the top of the ticket.. Got ya.  Most folks are just now getting to know Obama... which reminds me I promised to add more to the connecting the dots topic.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/4/2008 2:52:03 PM)

I'll be watching the game too.

Sanity -> RE: Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/4/2008 3:24:52 PM)

Are you kidding? For a vice-presidential nominee? Those are astounding numbers!

feylin -> RE: Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/4/2008 5:32:51 PM)

But some of those astounding numbers might be because of my own reasons for clicking on the speech this morning before work:

- I knew absolutely zilch about her.  I certainly never saw her speak publically before (I typically do not watch television).

- It is my non-psychic, purely-guessing opinion that Sen. McCain does not look well without makeup, therefore it is possible she could be the next President of the United States very soon and I wanted check her out.

Hardly, indeed.

This chic has cajones.

A reason as good as any other [:D] .

Numbers are in the third paragraph.

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/ratings/fnc_wins_with_top_rated_convention_broadcast_in_cable_history_93572.asp

Not quite as much as "the other guy", but pretty damn close.

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/2008_conventions/record_38_million_watch_obama_most_on_cnn_93090.asp?c=rss

Will be interesting to see tomorrow how McCain's numbers compare.

Well the answer to your question is in.  38.9 million watched McCain, breaking the record set last week by Obama.... and that is with McCain going up against the NFL season opener.

Will post a hard link as soon as possible.

Sanity -> RE: Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/5/2008 12:06:57 PM)

I got you covered;

I mentioned it in another thread already [:D]

Thadius -> RE: Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/5/2008 12:12:31 PM)

Thanks for the links.. I have only seen links to the preliminary numbers, I was waiting for the official media advisory from Nielson. [;)]

slvemike4u -> RE: Guess how many watched Palin speech... (9/5/2008 12:18:17 PM)

It is allways interesting and often illuminating  to see what the fringe element is up to...that explains McCains numbers.Curiosity and the car wreck affect explains Palin's numbers   [:D]
