YourhandMyAss -> How to pop an automatic out of park so it can be towed to zines (9/4/2008 7:02:13 PM)

His ignition froze and will not turn, therefor we can't get the car to wor k and we had to call a tow truck an when he droped it off he popped it back into park after popping it out.

How do we pop it out like he did, cause we still need to tow the car to zines in the morning an if we can't pop it and unlock the tires we'll have to pay 85 bucks again.

Try putting the key in the ignition, turning it then taking it out of park.
Does not matter if the car starts or not.

Just realized you said the ignition froze up.  Hmm, tow truck have the front tires off the road?

Ignitions don't usually "freeze up" .. Turn the steering wheel to the left or right while attempting to turn the key in the ignition. Once the ignition switch "unlocks" you can slide it out of park.

Be sure the parking brake is on.

SP.. I had a Saturn whose ignition froze on me... had to have someone break it out..for  a while I was using a screwdriver to start the damned thing.

The key won't turn at all, and tow trucks  can tow with two tires on road and two off, but if the car won't start , or the tires are locked they load it onto the ramp and piggy  back it home that way.

SP He tried that, it didn't work. he also held down the brake while trying to turn the key he banged against the steering colum he sprayed wd40 on the ignition and none of it worked, least of all threating it with bodily harm nor did cussing at it work.

Greedy .. a Saturn is not a car. It's a planet. And it has rings .. not an ignition.

Sheesh. Girls.

Seriously .. I hadn't heard that about Saturns .. but it makes sense .. because I know sevearl people who found that the keys to their Saturn actually worked in someone else's car.

Jeffff -> RE: How to pop an automatic out of park so it can be towed to zines (9/4/2008 7:50:16 PM)

Is it a General Motors car?... happens often enough on some models. It can be towed that way, on a flat bed.

Belive me.. I know

It's a ford. We know it can be towed, that's how it got home tonight but we wanna avoid another towing fee, specially for a 2 minute trip down the road, now we got it home.

*snort*

after that incident, I spoke with other Saturn owners... it seemed to be a 'known issue' with that year model (94)

Do you have a transponder key or a regular key?  I'm going to guess it's a regular key.  Several Ford models with regular keys have known issues with the ignition, yet Ford refuses to acknowledge and recall since they don't consider it a safety issue.  It's not a Focus, is it?  If it is, here is your solution - CLICK HERE.

Cali I swear you're a walking (well in this case, sitting and typing) encyclopedia.  You should write a "how-to" book.  :)

LOL.  I am cursed with a good memory.  You would think it would be a good thing, but trust me, not always.

What, are you going to push it down the road once it's out of park? How did he get it out of park the last time? With or without turning the key? Why did you have it towed home if you don't know how to fix it?

As SoulPiercer said, the problem is usually the steering wheel interlock. If the wheels are turned hard to one side or the other, that's almost definitely the problem. Pull the wheel HARD to one side while trying to turn the key. If that doesn't work, repeat while turning in the opposite direction. Other things to try are pulling the shifter down, then moving it firmly up to the top of the gate, in case the shift/ignition interlock is acting up, sliding the key very slightly out of the switch as you turn it, or trying a duplicate key (if you don't have one, you should). WD40 is not recommended, although it's too late- use powdered graphite to lubricate locks, it doesn't turn gummy.

If none of this works and the shop has to replace your ignition switch, take a look at your keyring. If you have a huge wad of crap on it, take it off, because the weight is probably what broke the switch.

L8bloomer -> RE: How to pop an automatic out of park so it can be towed to zines (9/4/2008 10:24:47 PM)

This sounds like something that happened with my car. I couldn't even turn the ignition and my car was stuck in one gear. It was some sort of cable that needed to be replaced. I think it might have been the shift cable? But I'm not sure if that is the name. I know this doesn't help a whole lot. I know that the mechanic popped it back into place in order to move the vehicle, but then it had to be replaced.

Termyn8or -> RE: How to pop an automatic out of park so it can be towed to zines (9/5/2008 12:10:07 AM)

Listen up.

I had this happen and it was a Ford, and the bare facts is if you cannot make that key turn you need a new steering column. I have taken them apart and I know how they are built, they are among the hardest American cars to steal. Also this results in this problem.

Put the key in, bang the steering column with a hammer on the bottom. Do it again and again. It might take a half dozen tries but it might work. Once the key turns, DO NOT LOCK IT AGAIN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. There is a way to release the defective lock cylinder without even dismantling the steering column, I can't iterate it here, but if you buy a new cylinder at a parts store it will come with instructions.

The main thing is, once it turns no matter how bad you had to beat on it, the lock cylinder is alot cheaper than the whole column.

Put the key in, take a hammer and hit the column at the bottom, try to turn it both ways. Do this five times. If it will go to ACC (to the "left") get ready and turn that key to the right as fast as you can, to keep the tumblers from dropping. I mean as fast as you possibly can, prepare yourself, perhaps even use something like a screwdriver with said hammer to make that happen. Once the key turns to the right, it is a simple job.

Once turned to the right, it is a five minute job, but if the key will not turn to the right, you need a steering column.

If hitting it on the bottom doesn't work, hit it on the top. If you get it to turn you can always touch up the paint. If not that column is going to be melted down and sent to China anyway.

I wish I could get the Ford steering column design in blue Buicks and my truck, it is one of the most advanced out there. Their selection of materials as well as their base design is excellent, and is probably one of the best things about a Ford. I would never steal one though, they do not make any car that I would "lust" after, some good daily drivers but even Lincolns and Mercurys do not impress me at all.

I wish I could have that kind of security in a GM, but GM let me down. I have had more GM cars stolen from me than anyone here I would bet. It is so common it is not even worth mentioning.

If you are interested I can describe how these modern ignition locks work, and why they are so hard to defeat. GM is also hard to defeaat, but it is the structure behind the lock is where GM fails, and Ford excels. However the cylinder itself is a very advanced design, practically pickproof, and now that I think of it, if that is the only problem with the car, you should not be calling a garage, you should be calling a locksmith. They might be able to dislodge the stuck tumbler and then simply replace the cylinder. Cheaper.

That very well may have been the best advice given.
