Anybody boarding up this weekend?
Monroe County is going to evacuate tourists Saturday and I think locals Sunday.

I hate this season.

sappatoti -> RE: Ike Preperations (9/5/2008 6:56:45 PM)

Up here in the Orlando metro, it's still too far away to make any sort of preparations, like boarding. There will be the store trips to stock up on the non-perishables, bottled water, etc., but until the storm's path is a bit more certain, we're just waiting to see what happens.

Best wishes to those in the Keys. Please, if you have any doubts... move on out.

Just a thought, are there many brick or stone buildings in the US ?

DesFIP -> RE: Ike Preperations (9/5/2008 7:03:44 PM)

Not in the Keys. No building stone there.

i know you asked a question...but i'm quite busy staring at your new pic................*gr---rro-ww-ll---*

I don't live in the Keys anymore, but I still have family there. So, I just watch them now. I called down there earlier to see what the plans were. I was just curious to see if there were other people who were getting ready.

You can blame the .dark. for that, she prompted me to post it.

GreedyTop -> RE: Ike Preperations (9/5/2008 7:45:59 PM)

*wholeheartedly agrees with Tulip*

I'm gonna get water and non-perishables.. pack up the important stuff in one, easy to grab container... get kitty stuff prepared..hope to god I can fit both cats in one carrier (since the other carrier has disappeared).. and hope like hell I won't need it all.

Echoing sappa here:  bugout, don't ride it out, Southern neighbors,.....

TheHeretic -> RE: Ike Preperations (9/5/2008 7:56:56 PM)

I live in southern California.  We don't get two or three days notice for an earthquake.  Must be nice.

Bethnai -> RE: Ike Preperations (9/5/2008 8:03:29 PM)

The land of shake and bake.  Right.

Way to go .dark.

I almost prefered earthquakes for that reason, Heretic... here, the media gets all frenzied.."DEATH!!!!!! DOOM!!!!! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!"

my first hurricane season, all that media crap had me so wound up that when Charley by-passed Tampa, I crashed HARD... the stress levels were enormous, I slept for 2.5 days..

Vendaval -> RE: Ike Preperations (9/6/2008 12:21:19 AM)

GT,

Is there anyway you can get another sturdy cat carrier and maybe some kitty tranquilizers from your veterinarian?  They usually respond so poorly to be moved at all.

All you folks be careful and stay safe!

GreedyTop -> RE: Ike Preperations (9/6/2008 2:46:50 AM)

The Girls are ok in the car.. not so sure they'd be happy SHARING a carrier..*sigh*

I'll call the vet tomorrow and see if they have any of the box carriers.. although both the Girls are so big and heavy that I'm not sure that would work.. LOL

I'm watching the Doom Channel, errrrr, the Weather Channel, right now. Jim Cantore just was saying that there are models now showing Ike will hit Cuba, go back to the Gulf, and possibly go into Louisiana.

On the one hand it's good to have forewarning, but the huge amount of uncertainty surrounding hurricanes can actually make it a big pain in the ass. I spent 14 hours in the car (no air conditioning, probably 95 degrees) to drive 200 miles evacuating for Hurricane Floyd in 1999, spent one night in a shelter, spent a lot of money we didn't have on gas and a hotel room, etc. etc. etc. They were predicting a dead-on hit as a strong Cat 3, massive destruction. We ended up getting 60 MPH winds and a bit of rain because it hung a last-minute turn.

In 2004 I think it was, they were predicting that Hurricane Gaston was going to stay out to sea, so I took the bike trip I'd been planning on. Overnight it hung a left and headed directly for our house, which was completely unprepared, and my wife had to spend the day huddled in the dark hoping that nothing was going to come flying through the windows.

We've been watching the tracks on Hanna waver from central Florida to central North Carolina for a week, Thursday night they'd decided on Wilmington NC, then Friday morning, they moved landfall 150 miles south. We got a little wind and rain. I spent about 20 hours this week getting the house and yard ready, and now I have to decide if I spend the day un-doing everything (deck furniture is stacked up in the spare bedroom, garage completely impassible), or just leave it until we get through September. Blah.

But, if I were in the Keys, I'd probably be packing my shit right now...

Bethnai -> RE: Ike Preperations (9/6/2008 7:11:39 AM)

That sucks GT.  Do you have a place to go if you go?

For myself, it would rock my world to just drive and wait. That's what I did take out cash and drive and stop and try to get a room and not know when to go back. As if there is a never ending supply of cash.  They are all quick on given notice to leave. Getting back in is another ball game.

All that panic is like a drink; you gotta accept it for it to affect you.

I ignore the local news and just keep track of NOAA reports.  I have a basic supply kit in storage with everything from a generator to extra ammo in archival packs.  The only thing I have to do when it's pretty sure to hit is put up the shutters and fill the gasoline cans.

Yep. Last year, everyone said Tropical Storm Humberto would make landfall somewhere south of Galveston; woke up the next morning, with Hurricane Humberto coming ashore on top of us. [>:]
