BitaTruble -> 2006 Palin Gov Debate (9/8/2008 11:19:26 AM)

I don't know how many of you caught the C-SPAN rebroadcast of the debate for Gov in Alaska back in 2006, but I sat down to watch it last night prepared to be fairly impressed with this young lady even though I dislike her policy and style.

She was quite decisive and really knew her way around the energy questions. The lady had done her homework in that regard. The rest of the interview, not so impressive, though she was gracious at times. She seemed lacking in luster when outside her comfort zone (which was in most other areas) and not very knowledgeable compared to the former Gov and state Senator with whom she was engaged. She failed to answer direct questions from her opponents and often she came off as sweet but dumb. When asked to name specific bills that she thought were bad policy, she couldn't name them but gave a general overview rather than specific legislation. When asked the same question regarding legislation on the pro side, again, she couldn't name anything specific but just gave another general overview.

The debate quite clearly showed her stance, however, on several issues which are actually opposed to John McCain so it will be interesting to see what happens there should that ticket get elected.

After the debate, I was left wondering why the voters had chosen her for Gov, until it dawned on me what their choices were back then.

I don't think she won that debate, but Sen Halcro really blew it when asked if he thought he could find a place for either Palin or Knowles in his administration. He said "Yes.. probably at the kiddie table at Thanksgiving" .. flat out condecending and remarkably childish. Palin, on the other hand was gracious in answering that same question and Knowles pretty much just avoided it.

From what I've been able to research of that race, Alaskans were most interested in the pipeline and energy revenue.. and that is Palin's strongest area. Overall, I think Palin was a very good choice for Alaska and hopefully she's gotten a bit of polish since then and learned a bit more about other important issues. We'll see.

What is the biggest issue and concern right now for most Americans?  Energy and the economy.

That being said, I agree with your observations.  She did however, leave no doubt of what her positions would be, even with the generalizations.  She seems to be a quick study, and her level of polish appears to have improved since that time.  The Biden-Palin debate will be very interesting to watch.

Actually the biggest issue for this american is our countries place in the bigger picture...aka foreign policy. I want a leader with the vision and forsight to see what we need, not just now, but 10-20-30-+ years from now and what steps we need to begin taking to get there. Even if it is painful.

I want us to get past the chest puffing and thumping, demanding respect because "we are". But instead earn respect, by example.

Joe Biden is absolutely going to tear her to shreds. It is really a remarkably unfair match and the blame for her complete embarrassment should be the republican party for choosing her. Biden is razor sharp and that is why her first real interview is not Meet the Press but a fluff piece with Charlie Gibson for god sake. I almost feel badly for her. Nahhh, not really. Go Joe.[;)]

Sarah Palin is being given a gift by the media pundits.  I don't think anyone out there in TV land believes that she will be able to handle the sharp wit and knowledge of Biden.  In my opinion, this super low expectation leaves so much upside for this gal from a town of 9,000 (as we are constantly being reminded) that if she can pull off just one great line (eg, "I knew John Kennedy, and you are no John Kennedy"), she will dominate the 30 second snapshots that, unfortunately, make up most media reporting.  What the eastern press elites don't understand is that many people relate to the Palin family and will be rooting for her.  She probably can bury Biden on energy and the Don Quixote windmill chasing of the democrat party, and if she can just hold together on the foreign stuff, she will get more than a passing grade from the public.

This should be a huge show.  I wonder what the network will be selling the advertising for per/minute.  This could be bigger than the "Superbowl".  Americans really have a choice this year which is a wonderful thing for our democracy.

Agree with most of your post, but this is very doubtful. Biden is huge on energy, knows his shit cold and has the track record to prove it. There is no way she'll be able to bury Biden on this nor he, her. This issue is a wash. Both are so well armed in this area they won't be able to hurt each other with it.

Again good job Bita...

All Sarah Palin has to do is be honest (in a political kinda way) and be herself. No one expects her to best Biden. She is McCains rebuttle to the "Vote for a Change" platform the Dems were chasing. I think her as the selection was McCains way of making this truly about the issues and insisting that Barrack be able to win on a platform of issues. At least that's what I hope...

Well, she has one aspect of the VP job down pat: avoiding the press by going into "undisclosed location" mode. It's been two weeks, guys... honestly, which one on one interview shows has she been on? There are TONS of questions flying around about who she is, and what's she all about? Yet the McCain campaign is bending over backwards to keep her away from the press.

They've even cut plans for her to break off from the trail with McCain, to cover more ground, as had been planned.

What do THEY know about Palin that they can't afford to allow her to campaign on her own?

Hate to burst your bubble,Bull.

"This election is not about issues," said Davis. "This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

That is Rick Davis,McCain`s campaign manager.
