Solipsistic -> Jessica Alba Stars in S&M-Inspired Declare Yourself Ad (9/11/2008 9:42:08 AM)

Many news outlets have been reporting this as a "bondage" related ad campaign.  What do you think?

<Feeling very "Dick Dasterdly" right about now.>

For me, the message and the tears undo any sort of "SM" about it outside of the mundane view that all SM is painful and wrong.

The pics are hot but she's clearly portraying a message in which she's trying to break free from the "bondage."  To me it relates to S&M about as much as the crosses I see people wear as a fashion accessory relate to Christianity.  It's just using an image to shock people.   It's using the mystery and taboo behind fetish images to draw attention to a topic unrelated to actual fetish.  I have no problem with their use of the image, I think it's a good ad.  I am more thrown off by the immediate suggestion that it's an S&M image as if the mere presence of restraints makes it S&M.

Perhaps I'm being cranky but I get frustrated when I think I see people reading too much into something.

I used to have that pic of Christina on my wall, looks so good in black and white.

I like the ad and its symbolism. Its pretty nice ^_^

And the design is "S&M inspired" - it doesnt have anything to do with bdsm in general, nor do I believe its making any sort of statement about the lifestyle.

Its just an image with symbolism.

bipolarber -> RE: Jessica Alba Stars in S&M-Inspired Declare Yourself Ad (9/16/2008 11:24:39 AM)

I hope it's available as a poster....  :)

VivaciousSub -> RE: Jessica Alba Stars in S&M-Inspired Declare Yourself Ad (9/16/2008 2:08:17 PM)

I wouldn't be too worried about what it "stands for" or how it "represents us". People are going to think whatever they want when they see these, and I'll guarantee you most people's only thoughts are going to be "hot pics".

Let's not get TOO ahead of ourselves here.

Usako -> RE: Jessica Alba Stars in S&M-Inspired Declare Yourself Ad (9/16/2008 2:42:00 PM)

Funny how if no one called it "S&M inspired" I wouldn't have thought that. I understand the message of the ad and it doesn't seem "BDSM-ish" to me at all. Maybe people's minds are in the gutter too much. =\

bipolarber -> RE: Jessica Alba Stars in S&M-Inspired Declare Yourself Ad (9/16/2008 3:45:02 PM)

I kind of feel the same way... my gut reaction, when I first saw the image was: "Nice! But someone didn't apply the tape very well..."  It's meant to be arty. It's using the symbolic restraint of BDSM play to stand in for the very real, non-consentual, societal rape we suffer at the hands of our government. (Or at least, the last eight years of it.) So, it makes it's point, without anyone getting hurt. Look on it as a nationwide head trip scene.

I don't find this ad to be in any way offensive to me, as a perv. (Other than the tape being so sloppy and loose.)

Still... I wonder how she'd look in some REAL shibari...

Oh, that's classy! And it's one of the least extreme of these pictures! "Remember, young folk! If you don't vote, it's like being kidnapped by a sick motherfucker who either sews your mouth shut, staples it shut, or drives screws and fishhooks through your lips, then jacks off as you cry in pain! It's exactly like that! It's exactly like getting mutilated and brutally raped, and it's all your fault for not voting! VOTE OR DIE, MUTHA FUCKAS!"
(sigh) God, I hate the young people. Nevermind that it's the electoral vote that matters, not the popular vote (i.e. the vote of you and I). Does anyone else think this is a nightmare inducing spectacle? In fact, if you're using fear and shock to get people to do something you want them to do, isn't that kinda, sorta...gosh, I don't know...terrorism?! Okay, I'm probably the only person here who's not going to sleep soundly tonight thanks to these ads, but in the mainstream, these look like these could be posters for Saw or Hostel that had to be taken down for being too disturbing.

UPDATE: Apparently the bondage tape came from www.stockroom.com and has sort of caused a 'run' on the stuff. Folks are showing up to their store with the poster in hand and asking 'can I buy this stuff?'

I just don't get Jessica Alba, what the hell is the fuss all about?

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Jessica Alba Stars in S&M-Inspired Declare Yourself Ad (10/8/2008 5:28:05 PM)

Ok, well regardless of anything else, my 17, 18, and 23 year olds completely 'got' these ads. Oh, and they didn't freak out that someone was threatening them or feel like they were being 'pressured' into voting or whatever... so it clearly resonates with its target audience in our household.

I think you missed the message -- the 'bondage' pictured here is all -self- bondage... the choice to deny oneself the opportunity to speak through one's vote. (And hopefully, the popular vote will be weighted heavily enough in one direction or the other this time that there will be no question about what the population wants). I don't care which direction it swings -- I don't want either of them. My vote is going to a write-in candidate. It just pisses me off to hear the constant bickering about who rigged what.

Politics, schmolitics...Jessica Alba in bondage is all I think about when I see the picture!

TabrisMaceth -> RE: Jessica Alba Stars in S&M-Inspired Declare Yourself Ad (10/10/2008 12:14:39 AM)

...I was kidding a little up there...but I'm dead serious that this looks like shock tactic bullshit that's either aimed at scaring people into voting or- and it scares me that this is more likely- they were making torture porn. People love Saw, and Hostel, and all that, right? Heck, if it's good enough for Silent Hill: Homecoming, it's good enough for the democratic process!
This reminds me of the last election, when another punk-ass celebrity did something similar to this. She said not voting was like being a dog or something, and at the end, it just gets freaky as all fuck. And anyone else remember P. Diddy's "Vote or Die" campaign? Considering this is about choosing the leader of the country for the next four years, shouldn't this maybe be taken a little more seriously and not turn it into a fucking spectacle?
