cloudboy -> Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/12/2008 9:17:53 PM)

Can someone tell me if its true that Sarah Palin never had a passport until last year?

To burnish the foreign policy credentials of a vice presidential candidate who never even had a passport until last year, the Republicans have been touting Alaskas proximity to Russia. (Imagine the derisive laughter in conservative circles if the Democrats had tried such nonsense.) So Mr. Gibson asked Ms. Palin, “What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?”

She said, “They’re our next-door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska. From an island in Alaska.”

Mr. Gibson tried again. “But what insight does that give you,” he asked, “into what they’re doing in Georgia?”

I gotta say, if that's true, its pretty damning.

So the hell what?

"The qualifications for the vice presidency are the same as those for the presidency. The vice president must be a native-born American of at least 35 years of age who has resided in the United States for at least 14 years."

Not a thing there about passports.

Nobody cares, except those who have nothing better to do than attack her over the most ridiculous things.

Keep it up, with every smear job the McCain/Palin ticket gets a bigger lead.

If its true that Palin never got a passport until last year, then it means that she's essentially never traveled abroad. This means that she's very much like GWB, who also had little experience abroad.

How exactly can you conduct diplomacy if you don't understand foreign cultures and other nations? How can you conduct foreign affairs if you haven't been out of the US for the first forty (40) years of your life?

McCain has made a really bad choice for VP here.

The fact that she's ignorant, insular, doesn't know a foreign language, had no curiosity to travel abroad means she should not be VP or President of the US. It not just a hole in her resume. Its a gaping hole.

By this logic, a forty year old turtle from Alabama could run. Some of us have higher expectations.

Right now I just want to fact check this whole passport thing. Its really not a source of pride or strength to be an ignorant American. If you don't travel, that's about all you can be when it comes to foreign affairs.

Shit, I've become provincial myself, hardly traveling --- but in my twenties I studied Russian and traveled to Russia some six (6) times and Europe two (2) times. I studied at Leningrad State University and Moscow State University.

This enabled me to see things for myself. It enabled me to process what it meant when Saddam Hussein was pulled out of a hole in the ground behind some ramshackle house in the IRAQI countryside. It means I get what's wrong with having a greenzone in IRAQ some six years after we invaded it. It means I have a sense of why Russia invaded Georgia. I also had a sense that the old USSR wasn't capable of competing with Western Democracies.

You should not be defending ignorance.

Exactly, who the hell cares?

Yes, a lot of people can view Russia from Alaska, but she did it as Governor.

That's the key.

It's the executive management experience that seperates mere sightseeing from gaining valuable foreign policy insights.

Raechard -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 7:00:35 AM)

I know hundreds of people with many stamps on their passport who still know fuck all about the places they have visited.

Taking a picture of St. Basil Cathedral doesn't give someone political insight into Russia, meeting Russian politicians and the Russian public does. Journalists do this and they write their reports for all to see. If you read enough of these reports from different viewpoints you can figure out the whole picture.

Your logic is flawed.

So there you have it.

She's never been to Russia and still doesn't know fuck about it.

But she has shown her wisdom be saving those travel expenses when she can just go to the library.

Oh wait, strike that library thing.

That hasn't worked out too well for her.

subtlebutterfly -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 7:13:16 AM)

I think that it's also interesting that she's also stated in some interview that she's only traveled abroad 4 times and that she's NEVER met any heads of states. That however is wrong because she has met at least 1 foreign president.
Personally I find it rather lame that a vice president candidate of a country doesn't remember the foreign heads of states she meets yet she should be expected to interact closely with those people if she becomes a vice president, and according to her she hasn't even traveled that often abroad..so it should be even easier for her to remember which foreign heads of states she has met. Kind of shows lack of ambition at least when it comes to foreign matters...[8|]

(It would appear, based on the last 8 years, history belittles your argument).

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 8:46:10 AM)

I have my own concerns about Palin, but whether she has ever traveled or not, doesn't tell me if she's dull or savvy.  It just tells me she's had focused priorities that didn't lead her abroad.

I really hate feeling ignorant, and hate even more BEING ignorant, but I'm to the point now that I just throw up my hands and embrace the inevitable.

How is one to discern the facts from the fiction, with so MUCH information out there, and little of it ethically reported?  Where can one go to find unbiased biographies of these people?  Was there ever such a thing as unbiased journalism or was that just another fairy tale?

(exhales in a sigh) I apologize for the unscheduled rant.  I just find this entire process increasingly disheartening.

cloudboy -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 10:31:06 AM)

Why would you want to elect someone President or Vice President when they never had a passport or only just got one in the last year or two? I can't even wrap my mind around it.

Sanity -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 11:19:39 AM)

Is it better to pick a life-long career politician like Joe Biden for Vice President, the old white guy Washington insider?

Scandal-is-my-middle-name Joe?

He's travelled on our dime plenty, raking in the cash wherever he went...

How does that make him a better choice. Wouldn't you like someone who stands for change, instead?

Simpleslave101 -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 11:37:20 AM)

Funny. Women piss and moan when they don't have a candidate running. Then they piss and moan when they have one but she doesn't fit their little criteria. They piss and moan when the women the originally wanted didn't make it. If Palin was a cooky baking, trug hugging lib then she would be viewed as not tough enough. Russia and N. Korea don't give a damn about being nice. They are not very concerned with the never ending abortion issue. Everyone will always get them and they will never go away. She sure continues to get alot of attention. The more attention she gets, the more she will be on the minds of the voters who want her in. Might be better then a socialist wanna-be minority who also has a militant wife with questionable ties to the church himself. I guess Palin in the flavor of the week.

cloudboy -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 12:26:17 PM)

Sanity, if the NYT is correct, she got her first passport about 1.5 years ago. McCain must have been off his rocker to select her.

Sanity -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 1:06:29 PM)

As Vice President she'll burn plenty jet fuel, I'm sure.

LookieNoNookie -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 6:15:53 PM)

If I recall, Bill Clinton was "Only a Governor" when he ran for Prez, and frankly, as a lifelong Republican, I'm quite happy to say, considering he was privy to one of the longest peacetime economic expansions in history, he did fairly well.

Reagan, last time I checked, was only a Governor, nominal experience prior to making a few movies....he seemed to have done okay....what with all that ending the international cold war and all.

I was 18 when I started my first business.  I didn't know shit from shinola, I barely made it through High School, and today that same business is the largest and oldest in my area for what we do in a reasonably large metropolitan area.

It became successful largely because I surrounded myself with people vastly smarter than myself.

Since then I've started several others, some have done well, some less so.  Recently I introduced a new product in March of this year that by August was already in use in 11 countries.

I couldn't care less if Sarah Palin had a history of world prominence, nor do I give a rats ass whether she has a passport, and frankly, I could care less that she ever made it past Denver in her world travels.

Has she studied history?

Does she have a burning desire to understand the issues?

Does she surround herself with people who know more than she does...so that when she has a remarkably stupid idea....they'll quell her desire to do something equally as stupid?

That's far more important to me than her passport.

christine1 -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/13/2008 6:25:03 PM)

not only should we worry about the date of her passport, we should also worry about what brand of lipstick she uses. [8|]

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Palin -- When did she get her Passport? (9/15/2008 6:52:02 AM)

I would like to see a woman in office, if only to set a precedent so that gender and race could eventually evolve into no longer being THE issue, or any issue at all for that matter.  I coudn't care less what lipstick she wore, or how much she traveled abroad or didn't.  I don't even care about gender or race, for me it is a non-issue except for the fact that it is being made THE issue.  Something I find extremely disconcerting if not outright disgusting.  I have concerns about Palin that I'd have with any candidate that was chosen, male, female or a pig in lipstick.  Frankly, were it not for who was grooming her, I'd be rather pleased she didn't have questionable ties abroad.  So, do I care if a broad went abroad?  No. I think an individual with sound judgment, savvy and wit and the right tutoring can learn what they need to know to make a good showing of themselves.  From past experience, even an extensive travel history and a good team of groomers won't assure us that our elected officials won't make jackasses of themselves or commit any faux paus while overseas representing our country.
