You raise an interesting question about the cultural changes from New Media. Prior to the last few decades politics were discussed in homes, churches, town halls, public squares, bars and cafe's. The increase in literacy and newspapers came first and later telephone, radio and television. Now the new electronic media has vastly changed the speed and distance at which we interact. We live in an era of instant communication across the globe, something our grandparents would likely have seen as magic is known as technology.
