I was wondering about all these political discussions going on on CM and some other places and wondering with this new largely unregulated public discussion medium, is this a help or a hindrance to those vying for election.

Before the internet, what was there for discussing politics, bars perhaps, but they were generally a select clientele, not everyone visited bars. So where before did the public discuss, or did they on the levels they now do on internet forums.

Given that public forums are watched by all and sundry, is it possible politicians and their support are listening in to what is going on ?

Is it possible they use the internet forums to guage the mood and there alter their policy to fit in with the running public mood ?

Are we helping them, or hindering them ?

Bars, barbershops, hair salons, small town grocery stores, work and many more places all held the discussions of politics. Politics is not the only sort of conversation being affected by the internet, and I would dare say the internet has been a negative to interpersonal skills of many folks (namely those that have it as their only means of communication).

I doubt that the discussion here is anything the candidates worry about... As Thadius has noted, this is the equivilent of sitting around the pot bellied stove at the turn of the century, discussing the state of the union over a bottle of beer. As I said before on another thread, it gives people a place to vent, but I really doubt anyone is changing anyone's mind about who to vote for.

Personally I think political discussions as we have here on CM are really great. Even when I disagree with a posting, with few exceptions the other side makes some good points and I have not seen much of the personal flaming that goes on all too much on chat venues. Nothing wrong with healthy and honest disagreement among people who believe in democracy. To your point, I hope someone in the campaigns is monitoring some of these threads. They represent a lot more valid picture of where the public is thinking than a poll of 1,000 people taken by call center employees reading off a list.

Perhaps it's more subtle than elsewhere, but it's definitely there

I have heard on the news a number of time about online blogs and what people in the know were watching and combating things/rumors or whatever with certain actions. If I were running for office I would want to know what people were saying, but I give a shit what they have to say, rather than am just interested in a vote.

I just picture everybody playing checkers while they debate and wonder who is winning.

You raise an interesting question about the cultural changes from New Media. Prior to the last few decades politics were discussed in homes, churches, town halls, public squares, bars and cafe's. The increase in literacy and newspapers came first and later telephone, radio and television. Now the new electronic media has vastly changed the speed and distance at which we interact.

We live in an era of instant communication across the globe, something our grandparents would likely have seen as magic is known as technology.

DK, he lied ? Please enlighten me. I've (up until now) not heard any allegations of the sort. If Holoppa lied I want to know. If he did, crucify hum.
