KRANWEST -> "Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?" Evaluation (9/14/2008 5:57:16 PM)

I've always understood the punch-line to the old, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" anecdote as a double-entendre, with "to get to the other side" used  to simultaneously depict death by vehicular collision (with an allusion to the afterlife), and the literal, unimpeded crossing of "said" street.

After a bit of research, I discovered that most experts, and your average Joe, consider the Chicken/Road situation to be an example of "anti-humor" : humor that results from the letdown stage of discovering that the joke actually lacks a punchline.

Do you think that the "Why did the chicken cross the road?" joke is meant to be a double entendre or anti-humor?

Are we turning this into surrealist humor?  Hell....why not?

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?

A:  More importantly: What did the road ever do to the chicken?

I guess my original question was author meant to gauge the opinion about the intentions of this joke's creator.

----This is kind of funny.

I always thought of it as a kind of shaggy dog story, one that makes no sense. But I'm sure to a very small person, the chicken joke is funny.

Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken? [Albert Einstein]

A couple days ago,  I saw a  unintentional "shaggy dog story" that lost its original punch-line in translation from some Nordic European language, but became even funnier because of the sheer lack of humor.  Here it is:

Three people are walking down the street.  The third person asks the second person, "Can I be in the middle?", to which the second person answers, "Why.... yes, you may."

Hmmm… I’m not sure I thought either.

I never assumed the chicken died, and I thought the punch line was a statement of the painfully obvious, but none the less, a punch line.

A translation of how it is interpreted in my mind; “Why did the chicken risk it’s life?” “It was attempting to progress.”

Chickens do not walk in a straight line.

nor are they thinking high level thoughts.

Another analogy I had come up with… “there was a nice looking cock on the other side!!”

You pick.

I have to admit, in all my years, I never thought of "to get to the other side" as in dying and going into the light.  I guess it's a possibility, but I always thought the punchline was just in stating the obvious....he crosses the road to literally get to the other side...of the road.

he crosses the road... due to the high cost of gas??????

I have to admit this is the first time I heard of the chicken/road joke relating to death. If the chicken dies, what's so funny about that? If that is the case, the chicken is brave to embrace death & cross over into the next life.
