I've always understood the punch-line to the old, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" anecdote as a double-entendre, with "to get to the other side" used to simultaneously depict death by vehicular collision (with an allusion to the afterlife), and the literal, unimpeded crossing of "said" street. After a bit of research, I discovered that most experts, and your average Joe, consider the Chicken/Road situation to be an example of "anti-humor" : humor that results from the letdown stage of discovering that the joke actually lacks a punchline. Do you think that the "Why did the chicken cross the road?" joke is meant to be a double entendre or anti-humor?

Are we turning this into surrealist humor? Hell....why not? Q: Why did the chicken cross the road? A: More importantly: What did the road ever do to the chicken? I guess my original question was author meant to gauge the opinion about the intentions of this joke's creator. ----This is kind of funny.

I always thought of it as a kind of shaggy dog story, one that makes no sense. But I'm sure to a very small person, the chicken joke is funny.

Hmmm… I’m not sure I thought either. I never assumed the chicken died, and I thought the punch line was a statement of the painfully obvious, but none the less, a punch line. A translation of how it is interpreted in my mind; “Why did the chicken risk it’s life?” “It was attempting to progress.” Kim

I have to admit, in all my years, I never thought of "to get to the other side" as in dying and going into the light. I guess it's a possibility, but I always thought the punchline was just in stating the obvious....he crosses the road to literally get to the other side...of the road.

I have to admit this is the first time I heard of the chicken/road joke relating to death. If the chicken dies, what's so funny about that? If that is the case, the chicken is brave to embrace death & cross over into the next life.
