Money market funds are supposed to be safe as milk, right?

http://www.nytimes.com/auth/login?URI=/2008/09/17/business/17fund.html&OQ=_rQ3D5Q26orefQ3DsloginQ26orefQ3DsloginQ26orefQ3DsloginQ26orefQ3Dslogin&REFUSE_COOKIE_ERROR=SHOW_ERROR

"In a new sign of market turbulence, managers of a multibillion-dollar money market fund said on Tuesday that customers might lose money in the fund, a type of investment that has long been considered as safe and risk-free as a bank savings account.

The announcement was made by the Primary Fund, which had almost $65 billion in assets at the end of May. It is part of the Reserve Fund, a group whose founder helped invent the money market fund more than 30 years ago.
The fund said that because the value of some investments had fallen, customers now have only 97 cents for each dollar they had invested.
This is only the second time in history that a money market fund has “broken the buck” — that is, reported a share’s value was less than a dollar."

We be fucked. The Cons keep on about "Free markets will solve all problems" but it's exactly their Chicago School of Economics DOGMA which has gotten us here.

Free markets for the little guy, but 100 billion bailouts for AIG? (that's what it was last night - up from 40 billion). Riiiight.

Let's face it, lads and ladettes. The Recons have completely fucked this country. Next stop: Zimbabwe!!! Hope you all can hunt, fish, and grow veggies.

People would be alot better off investing in real estate, oh wait, they lost their money.

Nevermind.

I am waiting for the restraining order to arrive... I have sent countless emails, regular mail, and phone messages.  I am fairly sure that my congressman and senators are aware of my concerns, whether they care or not is a different story.  I am sad to say that a few of those messages have not been as tactful as my posts here.

Is it wrong to ask a sitting senator, how much it cost for the blinders, ball gag, and stick up their ass that seem to be responsible for their inaction on particular issues?

(Last time I checked...they're pulling baby formula {milk} off the market because it's killing babies).

Well out of 300,000,000 people, it would be safe to assume 100,000,000 of them can write a cogent letter. Of that 100,000,000 there are probably 40,000,000 who think everything is fine, another 40,000,000 who figure it is futile to write congree, which leaves 20,000,000. A look at the Nielson ratings would probably reveal that they are watching TV.

Very good!  A role model.

I frequently contact them.  Well maybe 1 per month.

Keep it up.

So that still leaves 3 of us.

When we get bored with this then we run for office--------   or form a militia.

corysub -> RE: If y'all (youse guys) ain't scared yet... (9/18/2008 5:37:56 PM)

And when do you think this all started?  It seems that some people have a timeline that doesn't go back more than a convenient eight years!  No matter that Congress failed us taxpayers miserably?  Our "representatives" represented only their own self-interest and were in between the sheet with all the special interest groups ranging from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (The biggest recipient of their largesse surprisingly is running for President at the top of the democratic ticket) to giving America restrictive energy legislation designed, written and paid for by extreme environmentalists.
By the way, with respect to energy legislation, just read the recently passed "Comprehensive American Energy Security & Consumer Protection Act". Pelosi understandably believes that Americans are stupid people with good reason to think that this "farce" is going to give the democrat party a slogan going into the November elections.  Oh, we can drill offshore, but it has to be "fifty miles" offshore.  Oh, we can drill but only if the State gives its approval..but buried in the bill is also a provision that "no state can drill offshore withhout the approval of contiquous states within 100 miles!  Whenever the democrat party uses the word "Comprehensive" hang on to your wallet or your liberty!  In five years, when we are paying $6.00 for gasoline, when corn prices have trebled because of the demands of the ethanol industry, when Las Vegas goes black because the wind stopped blowing, we can blame it all on George Bush....oh..wait, he's no longer around to kick in the groin.  Gosh, who can we blame????  You know, Pelosi is right... at least half the Americans in this country are uninformed and easily led.

What do you mean form one? [;)]

Oh and do you think reenacting a certain tea party would be lost on the masses?

Thadius,

I don't often agree with your politics, but on this I am with you 1000%.
(And is it wrong to hope that voters such as you i, WILL write their senator and/or congressman when they want something done?  I think people forget that they work for us.)

Thadius -> RE: If y'all (youse guys) ain't scared yet... (9/18/2008 5:50:57 PM)

gina,

No worries.  I still remember that I am an American before the partisan crap.  That is the beauty of the system we have, we can agree or disagree with each other, and after the election is complete there won't be tanks rolling down Pennsylvania Ave to make sure the ousted President leaves.  I had some doubts back in 2001, but they left relatively peacefully [;)]

I wish you well,
Thadius

...anyone can spout off on a message board.

But a few can turn the anger/concern into constructive action.

True one must chose ones battles carefully...

I am  frustrated that the masses think they are allowed to vote every 4 years.  Well now- Ill comment as often as need be.....each comment is guidance on an issue.

I hope that FEMA is sending buses to Wall Street.

This would be a good time to push for an inventory of Fort Knox.

I'd do it to your senator for you, as a favour, like... for a small fee. I have a big broomstick with no lube: I'm sure it would drive the point home to him (I hope it's a man) that you're looking for some kind of answer.

Who said the spirit of enterprise was dead in this country ;-) ?

Meanwhile, Hoovervilles Bushburgs are sprouting up like mutant mushrooms after the trickle-down rain:

She already has that issue.  I would gladly pay to have the condition reversed.  With the current condition of the monetary system perhaps barter would be the best method of payment, eh?

Only if you have the balls to point out to them you could have made all that gear much cheaper out of random materials available in your kitchen and garage workshop and then offer free adjustments if something does not fit quite right.
