Shopping for banks is like shopping for sneakers, you just have to find the one that fits you and your needs.

Myself, I prefer a small locally owned bank for my checking, savings and bill paying needs. They are also great for a small quick loan, like when I bought my horse trailer. I found what I wanted, called the banker and told him I needed to borrow $5,500.00. He said he would transfer the funds into my account and to go ahead and write the check. He would mail the papers I needed to sign.

BUT, for a large loan like a car or mortgage, my small bank just will not work. They cannot compete on interest. So I go elsewhere for that. The best deal when I bought my car was through Mazda's financing, which is often the case with auto's. I am paying zero interest to them. The mortgage on the farm, another big national bank.

You've got to do the work to find out what is going to work best for you.

I have one of those prepaid Visa cards, it is issued thru a bank back east, and I got it at a local check cashing place for $4.95.  I have my payroll directly deposited to it, and use the card ANYWHERE they accept VISA, and at many atm's...with the atm card it's not so much about which bank it is, but which "network", those symbols on the back of the back of the card.  If I get cash back on a purchase, it costs me nothing.  I pay a $9.95 monthly fee, but that's cheaper than the transaction fees I would pay on atm's for a month.  Direct deposits can be made for government checks also......and the bank is FDIC insured.  Onr great thing is that as soon as the money is released to the bank, they post it....I get paid a whole day before any of my co-workers.  You might look into something like that......then you're not tied to a bank physically.

yes i like this feature...if the last biz day is a monday...i'll get the deposit on thursday at midnight (or fri morning at 12)....my roomy would get it sunday at midnight(mon morn at 12)...because mine is deposit so that its in for the last biz day and they dont deposit on the weekends or holidays since they're not open.

Find a credit union.

During the great depression many banks failed but not one credit union failed.

LaT

I did basically search for a now sound bank, its a free checking account because its direct deposit, if I do use an atm outside there will likely be a fee ( with wamu there was no addl fee my account was without service charges, unless I accidently did the rubber bounce) but for now the bank is one block away, as well as being national wide.
Say if someone give me a check for   5,000 I want to walk in and deposit it no matter where I am at the time. (yeah like that will ever happen LOL) I had trouble over the years with Wamu because they are in select areas as far as banking, the mortgage offices are nationwide, but doesnt have banking services everywhere.

I agree that a small local bank would probably be great, but unfortunately I have moved all over in the past 5 years and anticipate that happening again, Im a gypsy on  pension if you will. So branches are a consideration while buying my sneakers if you will.

As for asking for a check to be mailed, oh hell no, I trust the post office less than I trust the failing bank. I have watched the mail people delivering mail and they leave they trolly full of mail outside a building while distribute the mail in apt buildings, and half  the time those go into the wrong slot.  Plus as mentioned. I know that on midnight of the 3rd, exactly where my money is and if its due sat or sunday or monday I get it the friday before.  I totally trust direct deposit because I have the assurance the treasury dept gets it there, not a lurch in 6 years.

and Rog, again i have to veto the credit union, with my gypsy ways its not viable. Unless you can tell me there is a branch close to anywhere I end up living.  I dont have the stability of owning my own home or renting my own apt, I'm at the mercy of friends and family to help although I do contribute most of what I can happily.

So I did what LaT said, I weighed my options, found a national bank not in straights at this time, got the free checking with 100 bucks from them to boot. That alone will cover any off chance fee that could possibly hit my account for a while.

Im over my panic, Im getting my check on time, and think I made a pretty sound decision considering the time frame. I got feedback here, I researched Chase and I compared them to other top banks as well as trying to make sure they had more of a foundation. I did this last night till my eyes hurt.

Wama still has a grain of sand ( a few bucks of mine) in it, and they did offer great perks for free checking. They are just not going to get my deposit this month. *shrug*

I needed peace of mind for now and my anxiety is gone, Well except for the god awful racket outside my window with them putting up scaffold, where the noise triggers my anxiety, but thats a different matter. If all else fails and one more constuction worker stares at me Im getting a water gun and letting em have it. ROFL

I understand  service may vary.  I dislike waiting till 3:30 for the mail...but the service is good.
