I've met with those who have posted and with those who haven't.  I tend to think that one can get a better idea of what someone is like through their posts, especially if they post over an extended period of time.   Even more so if they come across as a sarcastic, cigar smoking sob.

People aren't the same always, they keep a part of themselves to themselves in ways you'd find surprising if you were to meet them. People thinking they’d know what to expect after observing them for any period of time here would be incorrect in that assumption.

The internet circumvents a person’s connection via the real world to another person and allows connection directly to the ego which is an inaccurate description of an individual.

As the Turkish proverb says... 'We have two ears and one mouth therefore we should listen twice as much as we talk.'

I agree with all of that. Especially the last part.

I've met people offline that didn't seem "themselves" based on what i had seen online up to that point. Never know, huh. I can come off as a **ck but that's only a small part of who i am..NO PUN INTENDED.

I'm not nearly as irritating in real life people would be shocked to discover.

Although I have had people take an instant dislike to me, how curious.

I think most are but we just don't see every aspect of that person through the screen.

I've seen some that once met didn't come off as genuine but that's a rarity i think. For the most part i've gotten exactly what i expected. Sometimes to my good and other times not :>  Not sure if i'm going off topic here as i do on occasion :>

Back up a second.. I think the Op just asked a second question.  First  - posters are good.. they meet a purpose.  Postee are good they read what the posters write, they have a purpose too.  I dont know anything about rich Nigerians... and the last question was about discretio (which is keeping secret?) vs. valor.  I looked up valor in the dictionary.. it means personal bravery.  So now.. what is the question?  Keeping secrets vs. personal bravery?  Help is needed here, I am thinkin.

A question, for those of you active in the boards... how do you consider those of us who've chosen not to join in the conversations (at least, not yet chosen to)?

Doesn't bother me any either way. I was one of the non posters till recently. I think i've been on the site for years before i posted anything. Never really got into it till i tried.

There are one or two posters that i would not be interested in meeting - primarily because of the way they come across in their posts. However, as i said, that is just one or two, out of the multitude of people that post.  Not bad odds really.

Your doing good then. I see more than a few that i wouldn't want to meet.

What would be your secondary reason, the fact they are on the other side of the world?
You may as well have said “I don’t like eating glass.”

He was referring to being asked to divulge the name of the person he is interested in... and he was responding along the lines of the phrase, "discretion being the better part of valor", in other words, refusing to answer but doing it in a very charming way.

There were two separate thoughts, trisket. I referred to the old saying "discretion is the better part of valor,' because a few were asking who I was thinking of when I posed the original question. I was just teasing the ones asking me to 'tell.' (And by the way, I already let her know. ;-)

Regarding the famous Nigerian e-mail scam, it's based entirely on the scammer assuming a personna, and then successfully maintaining it over many many emails. For anyone who falls for the scam (and I cannot BELIEVE anyone still does, that scam has been going on forever!), the scammer seems entirely legitimate. I was relating the scammer's ability to lie so well, to the possibility that even ones who post on the message boards can seem to be legitimate, though they may not be.
