For me, d/s has nothing at all to do with what happens in the context of a scene. When I'm playing with someone, it's all about mutual gratification. I get a toppy high, enjoy doing nasty things, but there's really nothing about this experience that I process as domliness. I'm kind of a service top. It's sex or sports or both, but it's definitely not power for me in any sense other than physical.
For me, d/s is all about what happens day-to-day in our relationship. I am queen, this is my castle, my wish is his command. I feel domly when the dishes are done and the living room vacuumed without me having to tell him. When he asks me for permission to do things that I'd just tell him I'm going to do, or maybe wouldn't feel the need to tell him I'm going to do, I feel domly. I feel as though in a very real sense, on a day to day basis and when it comes to complex or mundane things, he is my property to do with as I will. That's what dominance is to me.
