No ones head is going to roll.Let me clear this up for those that seem to be confused....SNL is produced by the entertainment divison of NBC...Not the News Division...lighten up.and Hoodie if they offend enough people ratings slip and the show dies..the free market at work....so obviously there are subjects off-limits...their job is to stretch those limits and make us laugh, when you attempt to do that you will offend some..I won't lose any sleep over it.

Well, if it's about the family of a REPUBLICAN, hoodie...

I mean, c'mon.

It's not like it was about Obama or anything...

So in other words, there is no subject matter that is off limits?

Wow... just wow.

I'm beginning to get that impression.  It seems funny that slvmike would talk to me about having compassion for those less fortunate, but it seems here clearly compassion has gone out the window.  Now the pain millions of men and women feel is good fodder for SNL.

I'm scratching my head here.  I'm guessing I must not know when to be compassionate, and when not to be.

TheHeretic -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 7:44:51 PM)

Palin really was a brilliant choice.  How better to get the American Left to display what vile, degenerate, revolting slime they are?

I hope SNL has new episodes every week, between now and the election.

Ummm....

again mike...

I said I liked the point and the satire, I thought they should have used a different subject matter.

So why would I turn off something I liked that didn't offend me?

But it doesn't take a genius to see that heads will roll with this one. The skit's subject matter should have never gotten on the air. It would have been a simple re-write and the skit would have been just as effective.
FDD not all replys are intended directly at you....by all means if you enjoy the show...watch,besides who knows how many more silly threads you can start between now and the election by watching and reporting so to speak,,,

And heads won't roll if the show dies?  SNL has been running for almost as long as I've been alive.  Funny... it's one of the longest running shows in tv history.

And I understand how the system works.

But for you to talk to me about having compassion for people who are less fortunate, and then you attempt to criticize my disliking of the subject matter chosen when the issue hits my doorstep all throughout the year is quite hypocritical, in my view.

Mike, SNL's ratings have been slipping for 20 years.  It's still on the air.  I really don't care about this skit.  You really have to go above and beyond to offend me or shock me.  But the skit was lame, the entire show is lame.  SNL just plain sucks, and it has for a long time.  Lorne Michaels must be blowing the entire board of directors at NBC to keep that piece of shit on the air.

Hoodie...this hits your doorstep? why because you have worked with victims?...Dear Lady I am a victim...and as one I'm telling you it was innocious,it poked fun at the media digging for dirt, and as such found a very dirty subject to illustrate how far a hungry media would go....in no way did it portray incest nor did it attempt to paint it as anything less than hienous...thus the little humor in the skit ...that nothing is beneath the
Having compassion for the victims of incest would of course be a little much to ask of Palin though, who would like to force those victims to carry to term....so please...your indignation with me is noted...and dismissed as ironic to say the least...

Sanity -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 8:26:36 PM)

This is about more than just Sarah Palin - her entire family may have been watching that "skit" live, and as hoodie pointed out there are certain others who shouldn't be the targets of such offensive material as that.

There was a recent thread about John McCain making a joke ten years ago about how ugly Chelsea Clinton is, and how the cause of her ugliness was due to Janet Reno being her father. Here's a comment made by a certain perennial Left-leaning member of these boards:

quote:

Exactly, so it follows that McCain is a fucking mean wanker - how much of an arsehole do you have to be? How would you feel if your daughter was talked about like that? McCain was an asswipe, there's no two ways about it. Perhaps he offered an apology, which would be more than appropriate - I do not know, but at least admit that he was a cunt, and move on - let's hope he's grown up a little.

Contrast that with the way this conversation is going...

For the record I said in that thread that it was years ago, McCain apologized, and that it was a sick joke but that I liked sick jokes. To that I'll add this - McCain's joke was told in a private setting, not on live nationally broadcast television. Had SNL aired a skit trashing a young Chelsea Clinton in the heat of an election I would have taken offense because we as a nation should be better than that.

This is a sick attempt by the cast of SNL to try to help swing the election by denigrating all the people of Alaska as well as a fine American family who may have been watching on live TV. Imagine them throwing all of Illinois under the bus to try to trash the Obamas... with some similar sick racist humor thrown in. You would have what we're discussing here, only with the shoe on the other foot.

There are two distinct standards on display here for all to see, and it's clear at least to me that certain people will say or do anything for the sake of expediency, and that to me is tragic. We as a nation are better than this, at least I hope we are.

slvemike4u -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 8:31:43 PM)

And again the target of the skit wasn't Palin's unmentionables it was ....the media itself The Times specifically...and if you don't think the meterial is appropriate for children to watch thyan exercise some parental control....and considiring Bristol's condition, you will have a hard time convincing me she is totally innocent.
Sanity would you let your whole family, including young ums watch this show....or are you suggesting Sarah likes to keep her children with in eyesight at all times ,in light of Bristols condition ,that is akin to closing the barn door after the....well you get the point.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 8:33:49 PM)

Yes mike,  but the subject matter was a direct shot at "white trailer trash"

Sanity -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 8:39:27 PM)

It's live TV mike, there is no way to predict that that was coming. So it was crouched in another skit... would that make blatant racism alright with you?

You're defending the indefensible, unless you really want to see everything sink to that level.

Nothing is too low. Any politicians' family member being fair game to the most vicious, the lowest most crude attacks.

Do you really want that? Just because it's a Republican this time, does that really make it alright with you?

slvemike4u -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 8:41:23 PM)

And since when was "trailer trash"considered a sacred cow?

Sanity -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 8:43:20 PM)

Yeah, it's okay because they're white.

That's some of that white privilege comin' at ya, ain't it.

Sanity -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 9:16:28 PM)

Instead of trashing a white family maybe they'll be torturing a kitten in a skit against PETA or something, what fun.

Thadius -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 9:22:17 PM)

While I agree the subject could have and should have been changed.  I am much more concerned with the concept that Al Franken was responsible for writing one of the political skits.  It becomes a completely different beast when somebody with something to gain begins using that medium to attempt to score political points for their party.

Just sayin,
Thadius

Thanks stef... I read the article and it sounds as if the skit was just plain tasteless...

TheHeretic -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 9:30:13 PM)

Another problem of course, is that if/when those legendary videos of Michelle Obama talking shit about "whitey" surface, he won't have a leg to stand on with the, already set, "family is off limits" defense.

The Republicans don't need Rove this year.  They have the Barry Bunch doing it for them.
