Knife play can go from the philosophical and psychological intimidation that bringing a weapon of such a caliber can only bring but can go above the benefits of gunplay which offers similar feelings. (but outside the borderline psychotic few, gunplay is often very hoaxish because a trained and skilled gun owner could never accidently misfire even if they were uncautious enough to leave it loaded, so the worse thing you can fear is getting pistol whipped) The reason being that you can go much farther with the knife than simply intimiation into actual implementation through actually cutting, skimming, scraping, ripping, in some cases branding. A very intense reality for both.

Note though that you are in fact dealing with a potentially very dangerous item and could in fact be fatal if toyed around with improperly. There are often classes or training you can get for such and should be taken with the utmost caution.

It is just what the name implies. A knife is introduced during "play". Sometimes it is just brandished or held against the skin, other times it is actually used to make (hopefully) superficial cuts.

It's attractive to some on two levels. The first level is the adreniline junkie level of having a lethal weapon introduced into play. This is little different than the motivation to go to a horror film to get the begeezus scared out of you. Fear in a safe context can (for some) be fun. The other level is the trust factor. Putting yourself in a position where you could be hurt or killed by your partner easily is a form of bonding. You've probably seen animals engage in this same behavior. The submissive animal rolls over and offers their jugular to the more dominant animal. The more dominant animal might even place their mouth over the jugular of the submissive one, but not bite. It's the same behavior, we humans just like to think that we are more sophisticated.

Take care of yourself

innocent,

I suppose knifeplay is considered by many to be a form of edgeplay, but knifeplay can be also be harmless and fun, like when your partner uses a knife to cut off your clothing.

As January and afmvdp have spoken so eloquently, I shall not add to the 'what'... but will respond with a personal 'reason why'

Knife play for myself on a submissive level involves the feeling of trust I have to allow a Person to use such an implement upon me. Also, the sensation and feeling of such awonderful object... the coolness and 'drawing' of the blade is astounding. The sight of the cut... the feeling it can give... are all deep on a personal level. I have never 'feared' the blade but I do revel in its power... as well as the power of the hand that holds it.

Trust, Power, Sensation and Imagery. (Hope thats kinda informative on a personal level)

there are several long posts on knife play.change your setting to 365 days and search thru all the postings on such information for those new to the site. A lot of items I am seeing asked here are issues allready addressed back 6 to 8 months or so in great detail. I suggest those new to the Boards take a week and read thru all the great information with in and your answers might be answered with out asking a question. JMO

I think this board needs an FAQ or general linked reference for that matter. Even in just the short ammount of time I've been here I see the same questions asked ten times over.

And you'll see that on any mailing list or forum that you're on. There are very few questions that haven't been asked a dozen times or more. The responses are the only things that vary from each time.

Not everyone has the time or inclination to sit for a week to scroll through old messages.

Yah, if a thread is repeatative and the "old timers" are bored with it, they don't have to read the thread.

I find knife play very interesting. It can have more effect than one would imagine on people one would not imagine...
