I know this merry little group has members who know alot more about PCs than I, so I ask. This is strictly a Windows XP question. This is XP Professional version 2002 without SP1 or any updates as of yet.

What I want to do is to go into safe mode, I think. I have done it before the hillbilly way, about three cycles of starting it and pulling the plug did it. I want to know how to do it correctly. I know it is likely a keystroke or sequence, but I need to know that, as well as exactly WHEN to hit the keys.

Here's what I did, XP got screwed up bad, so I reloaded it. She told me that all her tunes and pics, everything was in my documents. The hell you say, so I did what I call a sidestep reload. This is not the first time. It has been a while and maybe I am not pulling the plug at the right time, whatever it is I can't get into safemode.

Previously, more than once, once in safemode I was able to log in as administrator, even though a normal boot was transparent, that is there were no passwords involved. Not even user selection. I selected administrator.

Somewhere along the line, I found that in this "hyper" administrator status, I had an option to "Take possesion of these files" from the previous account. You can't have them until that is done, it says access denied. (tried to call them but they are out of business lol)

I have successfully done this in the past, and really I can't say that you need to be in safemode to do it, if there is another way I would like to know.

When you do a sidestep install, all that is necessary is for you to hit the backspace key, but at the right time. When it says to choose install directory, the default will be C:\WINDOWS, hit the backspace and it becomes C:\WINDOW. Continue with the install, C:\Documents and settings will not be overwritten. Also anything saved on your desktop is then retrievable.

It's just that you do not get the option to sign on to the old account. As such you will not have access to the old files. This is the only problem right now, it looks like all the drivers are in nicely, it's a bit older machine and isn't that fast, but it works. I told her I would do it, and that I have done it before but it isn't all that easy. She just wants her files back.

After I get that done, I'm going to show her how to make new directories for her stuff in C:\, like C:\MUSIC etc. That way Windows doesn't touch it. Same way with C:\Program files. They are there but alot of them that won't run until reinstalled. Some will though, and I got a bunch of them. Some of those "portable" programs can be useful.

I will stop now to avoid rambling (go ahead and say it - too late - hardy har har lol)

The main question is how to get the files accessible.

Turn it on and hit F8 right away. You might also be able to find a "restart in safe mode" option by running msconfig (windows start button/run/type in "msconfig".

If your old account was password protected you won't be able to access those old files even if you reloaded windows in an adjacent directory.
Are you still able to log on to the original windows installation?  You can do that by scrolling down to the other windows xp professional listed as it starts up.
If not and your old log on was not password protected you can find them here:
C:
Documents and Settings
Check under your prior user name, then my documents.  Once you open that you can copy and paste or cut and paste into your new login documents.

How you get into safe mode depends on the machine.
With a DELL, you have to wait until you see a small white cursor blinking at the top left corner of the monitor, THEN press the F8 key several times.  (If you do not wait till that moment you will not have use of your keyboard)  Scroll up using the arrow keys where it should give you the option to use safe mode.

With any other brand you can start tapping that F8 button immediately when you hit the button to turn the computer on.

If by some bad karma the old account was password protected in windows and you cannot access the files, you will need a program like Mini-PE to open the old files, unwrite protect, then install in the new profile.

Termie,

Get or download a Ubuntu LiveCD, and boot up with it, in "live mode".

This will then give you complete access to ALL windows NTFS files, and you can move or copy anything you need to ensure you save to a usb device, move to a different folder or such, without worrying about permissions.

Still might be some issues, but I've done it a couple of times.

Have you tried in safe mode or at the sae mode screen to restore to last good configuration depending on the restore point  you can go back and retrieve  once the restore point has been executed.

I would recommend using the safe mode entry via F8, then as soon as possible create a fresh install of XP behind a partition. It's not too technical, you should be asked if you want to create a partition when you install, obv just click yes (your operaiing system will now be one letter behind your usual one ie drive :d instead of :c)

You can then do what you can to save or repair the first install knowing your pc won't die for good. If there is no hope for the initial install and the 2nd works properly, delete the first version of XP to make the 2nd install your automatic loading OS.

I'll send you my Yahoo address - get in touch with me there.

The way you are going about things will end up in a corrupted system and you will wind up re-installing.
