bakbar -> Schizophrenia (9/30/2008 2:56:09 AM)

Ok I am not going to try and lie here. I have a paper due in 3 days about this and I would really, really, appreciate any help! [:(] I know I should have worked harder and all, but one thing led to another and I am just starting on it. The question is "To what degree is schizophrenia caused by problems with genes?"

Once again, I will really, really, appreciate any help. Please?

P.S. And can anyone explain what APA style is???

Why would you be asking here?  We aren't experts.  Go to a library.

APA style = http://www.apastyle.org/

As for your paper, you have three days which is plenty of time.  I wrote a 20 page paper and cited 15 sources (8 of which were primary sources) in less time than you have.  Stop hoping for someone to do it for you and get cracking.

Seem to recall that it can run in families - but then families often share the same environment so its nature/nurture. Check out studies on twins raised separately?

Also seem to recall its more prevalent in Afro-Caribbean populations in the west, but this could be just as much environment as genes - AC families tend to live in poorer and so more stressful than average conditions.

I forgot to mention....Look for psychiatrists in the yellow pages today.  Call them and rephrase your question.  I did this all the time in college.  I could get people in different fields to talk to me for an hour.  Don't lie, tell them what you're doing but chat them up.  You have a primary source right there, and they will answer all your questions.  When you write the paper, make sure you cite that source in the style you were asked for.  I gave you the link; it won't be hard to figure out.  If memory serves, APA is fairly simple.

You should also account for the increased prevalence of schizophrenia among people whose mothers were experiencing famine/malnutrition during their pregnancy(environmental influence), and the assumed constant rate of 1% schizophrenia among all populations at all times.

There's this really cool concept that would help a lot here.

It's called research. Try it!

Back in my college 101 days, the studies said that people who are to become schizophrnic will show signs between the ages of 17 through 22. If you don't come down with schizophrenia by the time you turn 25, then you're safe. If you have a grandparent, or great grandparent with schizophrenia, you have increased odds of getting it as well. If it's just a parent with schizophrenia, then you only have to worry about kids and grandkids.

I haven't reseached schizophrenia in a while. It brings back a lot of bad memories with a past relationship and damage caused within my family.

One of my pals is schizophrenic, a name I feared at first when I heard it, but after knowing the guy for some three years now, all I have to say, is what an excellent person. A sort of person who is there for everyone, his apparent 'disability' makes him one of the best people I have ever known and in reality, he with this illness is one of the most caring people  I have ever come across, with a depth of thought and understanding which many, 'normal' people could do with. His damage over the years has come from the UK mental health system, which has been less than kind with it's so called care. A guinea pig for new medications he has been, often the effects of which are worse than the original complaint.

He has a care worker, a guy that knows it all, and reads too much into the simplicities and effects of life, like my pal has not tidied his flat, therefore on the day of the visit, the mess is seen as a sign that he is getting ill again, my question, does everyone always have a tidy home, is not tidying a sign of mental illness, or just one cannot be bothered sometimes. Honestly, constant tidying when there is no need is more of a question to me.

Ooh! Question about psychology! Goodie!

So...just genetics? I could just copy, paste, and not say anything to hope people think I'm smart, but here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia#Genetic

Even has a part about genetics for ya!

Just to say this is so important - schizophrenia doesnt mean "out of control violent and evil". More or less, every schizophrenic I've met has been, in my opinion at least, more naive and misunderstanding of whats going on around them than anything else, which makes them often like children in how they see things and do things - innocent, straightforward and uncomprehending of others' views of them.

And the care worker - yes, very much identify with that description Aneirin! My friend had another psychotic episode recently (cannabis, again) and whilst we could all see the situation he was in, he's now on treatment and back to normal (whatever normal is) - but the care workers seem to be wanting him to be ill you know? They seem to pick up on anything and everything as supposed evidence - and that makes him upset and then angry - which of course confirms their desired diagnosis.......

Amen. I think waiting till the last few days is actually the way to go personally. Get more done, are forced to focus entirely on the  project.

Hell, I'm a writer. A three page paper is two hours work.

I agree. Three pages is just an intro sometimes, and if you do your research, will be very easy to crank out.

Raechard -> RE: Schizophrenia (10/1/2008 10:02:39 AM)

Well firstly bakbar schizophrenia is in the 'enia' category of diseasements.

This category of diseasments is not to be confused with the similar named 'ilia' category which include diseasements such as haemophilia.

Look that’s three lines already, including this one depending on your window size.[8|]
