I suggest gargling with hydrogen peroxide (with equal parts water so it doesn't work too well).  It's always done wonders for me with colds/sore throats and it doesn't taste nearly as bad as salt water imo.

Another way to treat a sore throat is to work on your sinuses.  Often sinus drainage is the cause of sore throats.  I use a neti pot and start a regimen of mucinex as soon as I recognize a cold/sinus infection.  I also eat Halls with the liquid centers like candy.
