Sore throat - home remedy questions - 9/30/2008 7:00:48 PM

I went to the doctor and he has diagnosed strep throat. I'm on antibiotics the size of horse pills.  The doctor told me to use chloroseptic spray and to gargle with salt water to aid in reducing the swelling and to generally help me feel better.

So my question is this....
Is there a difference in gargling with Sea Salt or garling with regular Iodine infused table salt?

All we have is sea salt in the house but I think I remember my gram putting iodine on my cuts as a child.... which made me think for all the gargling with sea salt I'm doing - I'm really missing the point.

thanks,
jani

Either should be fine...I get strep about once a year (why, god whyyyyyyy!?).  I actually have never borther to gargle or use the spary, the antibiotics are what are key...that and tea with honey.

I'm not sure the sea salt will make a difference.  The point of the warm saltwater is to help to reduce the swelling in your throat, and to .. sort of clean things out.

If you're looking for something soothing on your throat as well, I know someone mentioned tea, but I prefer hot lemonade.  Just nuke a cup of any kind of cheap store-bought lemonade, then add a good-sized teaspoon of honey(to cut the increased tartness after heating).  Tasty, plus it's very soothing :-)

I've had strep too many times to mention, and some of the times in my life when I've been the sickest, it was strep.  I know how you must be feeling.  Take care of yourself!

Honey is also antibiotic..have no shame getting a spoon full, esp. since you are prob. having a hard time eating so any calories will help.

So far, you're doing everything right. I'll just add to it.

Break out the pepper and jalopenos. Nothing like good old spicy food to fight a sore throat. Hit up a chinese buffet for everything labeled Volcano. Hot showers/baths will also help.

Also, putting on some headphones and listening to your favorite music can't hurt. Studies show that music increases the antibodies in your syliva that fight off bacteria.

Last but no least, sex also helps with building up your immune system.

I hope this doesnt sound gross or something....  but strept throat can cause papules of pus on the tonsil area.... warm salt water helps as a disinfectant to get those pus papules off.

I havent had strept in years but I vividly remembering spitting out pus after a good warm salt water gargle.

I did have serious cases of strept tho and had my tonsils removed finally at age 23.

Either type of salt will be effective.  You can usually tell that it's working because there's always that soothing feeling after you've done the gargling.

If you can't take the gargling, eating something salty works too.  Potato chips, pickles, or those packaged dried chicken noodle soups.  That stuff is loaded in salt and if you sip down a cup of that, it has the same soothing effect as the gargling.

Salt is good to gargle with - I don't know if iodine infused table salt would help it any more.  I was always lead to believe that iodine was preventative rather than an improver.  So in other words, once you have something, it can't really help.  But Im not big on iodine.
I would use honey and lemon to drink and try garlic in some form.

Lemon or lime juice mixed with honey sounds good, but it is really just fruit juice.  Use 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar mixed with 1 tbsp honey in some hot green tea, more effective for soothing and reducing inflamation.

this is why gargling with salt water helps

http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/why-gargle-with-saltwater.html

its a short lived solution to the pain and swelling.. and should be done many times a day until the anibiotics kick in... usually 48 hours

the type of salt doesnt matter

but, as i often forget.. too much salt can be counter-productive

Tazzy - thanks for the information  about whether the type of salt matters and everyone else for offering suggestions.
Honestly I'll probably employ them all - except the salty potato chip one - that just hurts too much....

When Fox gets sick, he takes to carrying around a small bottle of honey with him and takes it straight. It works about like cough syrup in that it coats and soothes fora short term fix.
And what I used to live on , when I would catch anything, is along the lines of the hot lemonade. Straight hot water and lemon juice, half ad half, and some honey for flavoring. Keeps all those colorings and everythign else the store brnads have in them from getting in you but has the same effect. Itl sting a bit, but it works great.

Either sort of salt should work for this purpose.  Without going too far into the chemistry, the salt solution draws water from the tissue containing less salt (the inflamed throat), reducing the swelling somewhat.

I'd advise against swallowing any of the salty gargle; heavily salted water is an emetic (induces vomiting).

The iodine in table salt is added as a dietary supplement.  I'm not sure how necessary it may be, but the original purpose was to make up for low levels of iodine in western diets.  Low iodine intake can result in thyroid problems.

whenever i have a sore thraot, be it a simple sore throat or strep I use honey. not honey in tea, or in lemonade or on bread with pb, i buy a bottle of honey, and carry it with me for a few days...when i feel the need i take a spoonful. some people think im weird... but it works better than throat/cough drops,

The honey that we get here, which tends to be clover honey, has virtually no antibiotic properties. Tastes good though.
