damia -> Itchy scar? (10/1/2008 12:39:00 AM)

I have a scar from some  blood play...the cut was made with a very sharp dagger edge  (very little pressure before it cut). It was a very shallow cut that stopped bleeding without difficulty, and it healed in the normal amount of time, with no redness or any such.

However, now it is healed over,  it feels slightly raised and it occassinoally itches.

Why would this one do that, and none of the others? It's not open at all anymore, but the itching is driving me crazy when it happens, and it's the only scar I have that is raised (barely raised, but all of the others are smooth, even with the rest of my skin)..

How long have you had it?  It will still be healing if it is less than 6-8months old which is why it's itching still.  Does it stick to the original area or is it larger than the original wound?  All scars heal differently and it could simply be your body reacted by using more collagen.

Four months ago, so yea...okay, probably still healing a little. That makes sense. :)

As long as it's not weeping or bleeding, if its only 4 months old, personally, I wouldn't be worried.  If it changes colour or bleeds/weeps then go to the doctor.  Have you heard of a product called Bio Oil?  It's expensive but really good.  I have used it on myself and my daughter and it was recommended to me by a doctor.

I had surgery on my knee when I was 17, that scar still itches occasionally.  Of course because of the placement, it has stretched and the 13 stiches still are very dominant.  Scar tissue under the dermis and nerve endings are what make mine itch.

I had a form of carcinoma removed from the line of my upper lip and its been several years.  Sometimes it itches, even puffs up inside my lip and I bite at it....  it is scar tissue.  I gently rub any type of cream into it.  For 6 months after my lip incision, I was told to rub neosporin on it to prevent any sort of infection and to decrese the scar line.  It is barely recognizeable, except from the inside of my lip.

Adding:   I make skilled nursing visits and half are wound care.  I have noticed that sometimes the dermis is healed and a slight infection tends to emerge from just below the skin (dermis) because the tissues below are not healed completely.  Ususlly an antibiotic clears this up if this is the case.

Scar tissue can itch for a very long time.  Try rubbing Vitamin E on it to make it less prominent, worked well after my hip replacement.

1% Hydrocortisone cream (over the counter) is great for the itching

One reason for a raised scar is placement. If the tissue is under tension it can cause it to spread and raise . Think scar on the knee verses scar on the arm. the one on the knee spreads and takes longer to heal because of skin tension and joint movement. Incisions on the breast tend to do this because they are under tension - hanging - and move a bit. [:D]  or a lot!
