Status: offline 		Lance Cpl. Steve Garren, 39, of Greenwood, is charged with one count of violating the civil rights of Grant, who testified Tuesday in the first day of the trooper’s trial.
A 15-year Highway Patrol veteran, Garren is accused of deliberately hitting Grant with his patrol car while Grant was fleeing on foot after bailing out of the Honda.
“Once I was hit, I flipped,” Grant told jurors. “When I fell, I completely hit the ground, bounced right back up and kept running.”
The incident was captured on Garren’s dashboard camera video, which was played for jurors.

Status: offline 		"Grant confirmed he has at least four previous convictions for driving under suspension, plus convictions for failure to stop for a blue light and possession of contraband. A father of three, Grant was in cuffs for his testimony, explaining he has been in jail since May on a child support charge."

Boy, I sure feel sorry for this upstanding citizen, who he himself made the choice to flee.

Status: offline 		I don't think its an issue of feeling sorry for the guy. When the trooper says, yeah its deliberate, that is a problem.

Status: offline 		So it is legal to shoot a suspect who refuses orders to stop but not legal to stop him with a car? And he couldn't have been hit very hard if he got right back up and kept running.

Status: offline 		From what I saw on the video, he did hit him pretty hard.  He could have killed him or seriously injured him, and all to catch a guy driving on a suspended license.  It was pretty stupid to admit he intentionally hit him, when he knew he was on tape.  I don't think he should go to jail for it, but it's his own fault if he gets fired.

Status: offline 		It doesn't really matter what the trooper knew, Lazarus.  You can't run someone down with a car as they flee from you.  The police have requirements for using deadly force, and that's what this was.  He really could have killed that guy.

Nope, none of the above is legal.

There are a lot of people who run.  A lot. Still does not justify the above.

Status: offline 		The idot make the choice to run.  He could have stopped when he saw the lights and siren but no he ran.  as far as I am concerned he got what he asked for when he ran.  WHEN ARE PEOPLE GOING TO REALIZE THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WHAT THE POLICE OFFICER SAYS TO DO AND YOU WILL NOT BE HURT OR HARMED!!!!!

If you really believe this, than you are extremely naive.  It's not an uncommon occurrence for police officers to abuse their power and harm innocent people.  Ask Abner Louima who was beaten severely by the NYPD, than sodomized with a plunger so brutally that his colon and bladder had to be operated on.  He never offered any resistance to his arrest, and it was later determined that he was innocent of the charges. 

I will grant that this guy should have stopped.  He was stupid for running from the police, but the police can't be allowed to act like cowboys.  If acting professional and obeying the law is too much,  than they should find another occupation.

Status: offline 		Bizarre that it's a "civil rights" charge. I wonder if the prosecutor chose it so that the media would be satisfied, but the cop would still walk. Really, it's assault with a deadly weapon. AFAIK, there's no civil right promising freedom from having Crown Vic marks on your ass.

the constitution has been rewritten like mad in the past 50years!  seems the trooper just wanted to put his mark in there..."Crown Vic".......LOL!
