My brother is retarded (Developmentally Disabled)

But he's not stupid.

Just saying.

It's a subtle joke, which can bare a little analysis.
Even here in the U of K we hear
'is America ready for a black president'
You can loosely interpret this as 'a member of a minority' or has America grown up and become open minded enough?
His use of 'retard' is deliberate, as it is way out of date and in no way 'not offensive' so do you start laughing, get outraged, point out the difference between black and retarded oops er challenged, oh am I more concerned over semantics...fuck where's my head now...
Wait for him to add, and even OJ isn't rich and famous enough to stay out of jail now, maybe that's a little sweetener to the white voter...
Humour can push boundaries and make us think.

Out of date yes, but still the oft recognized label for those with developmental
disabilities none the less, whether it is agreed as such or not.

The offense arrives when those with developmental disabilities are forced to
accept G.W. Bush and his stupidity as a disabled brother without so much
as a role call vote.

My brother votes "NO" and gives Chris the bird. Yeah, that's pretty much
outdated too, but still the oft recognized universal sign we all know and love.

Stupidity has created a lot of disability, but disability is not responsible for stupidity.

I find that being articulate, straight forward, precise of purpose,
specifically focused and clearly honest in intent and delivery is
the best approach at communication using dignity and respect
when addressing a bunch of retards.

Throw in a whole lot of winks, "gosh darn it's", "you betchas",
and God forbid, puke, they tend to arch an eyebrow, smile at
each other and look at you like a bunch of electorates.

I know retards Quick Draw Mcpaw.
Retards are friends of mine.
You, Quick Draw Mcpaw,
don't know retards.

Seriously off the mark

The rest of the story, though Kitten and I have made amends and are going steady.

True, but the winking, the 'gosh darn its' and  the 'you betchas' made me want to puke a little. It's bad enough to be a populist, but to patronise the electorate that much and talk to them like they're a bunch of retards was seriously off the mark.

Part 2
Does anybody know what this mean? The intent of this post seems to be all over the place: do you object to Palin addressing you as if you were a retard too? Or don't you like that I noticed that she was talking to the audience as if they were a bunch of retards? Are you arguing that she was articulate, or are you agreeing with me that she wasn't? What's off the mark, me, you, or her, or all of us?

For a term you find insulting, you certainly like to use 'retard.'

During the potato famine, Dean Swift suggested that the Irish poor should sell theiir children to the rich to make pies, lampshades and footrests. Lo and behold, 1000s of outraged letters were sent to The Times and a subscription was begun which raised a great sum, this also led to the creation of some organised charities still functioning today.
He is perhaps better known as Johnathan Swift, the leading satirist of the day and author of Gulliver's Travels, The essay is called 'A Modest Proposal.'

If you refer to the post our lovely lynnx shared, it was in answer to kittens,
as I posted, and I simply threw back at her what she had thrown out.

If you doubt my sincerity, I have a  modest proposal for you. I invite you to
walk a day in my shoes as a caregiver and support to not only my brother,
but many others.

If you simply don't get my own tongue and cheek humor shared here, perhaps
it is a bit too complicated for you. There's an extra chair at our table at the
day habilitation center if you would care to join us for some fun and learning.

I don't doubt your sincerity. There is substantial doubt concerning any sense of humour you imagine you possess. You have dragged a joke with a social point being made, into a single strand tirade. You do not come over as in any way complicated. Single minded would be more accurate. Are you attempting to paint me as anti disabled? Shame on you. Anything you can type in coherent English, I'll understand. Are there centers providing help for those demanding how other people speak and think?

I'm mom to 2 autistic kids. I volunteer as an advocate for special needs and ESOL kids. I co-founded an autism organization in Maryland where I serve as education advisor. Sometimes jokes making light of disability make me laugh despite myself. Sometimes they offend me. I'm not sure how to pinpoint where the difference lies. I saw comic T-Rexx open for someone who was actually funny, and he so offended me with his series of jokes about his MR (as we call it in my local disability community) family member that my beloved held tight to me and preemptively asked me not to go tell him what I thought of him after the show. I will never watch another set of his again.

I don't tell my beloved, who is black, how to feel about black jokes. You shouldn't be telling chia how to feel about disability jokes. Cut him some slack. You can't know his life and his experience, so it's not for you to judge.

Obviously your job has ingrained a patronising tone. Save it for those who appreciate it.

Ummm, being a caregiver to my brother and others isn't my job, it's simply
a wonderful part of my life. I piss people off for a living full time.

I came on board here and voiced my opinion pertaining to a joke, my right.
All in all, I think I kept my responses fairly light-hearted as most here know
me for doing.

You on the other hand have accused me of launching a tirade, being simple-
minded and uncomplicated, incoherent, patronizing, and demanding of what
others think and speak.

I realize I probably shouldn't piss off a MadAxeman, but really, calm down.
It's opinion in a little window on a screen, not a proclamation of how you
must believe. Our opinions here differ, no need to break out in a sweat.

You see, when God gave me this big heart, he left lot's of room for "give a rats ass"

And that Sir, is what I leave you with, appreciate it, or not.

p.s. Thanks Faith, hugs to you.

You both seem determined to flip the point.
I was saying that humour can push boundaries and make us think. Since then I've been told to not think this or that way because of people you are related to and obviously love. You don't know how I think, I've not expressed any thoughts about disability.

Never mind, Chris Rock's line has gone over plenty of other heads. There is a silly tendency on here to suggest extreme opinions for other people, who have not aired such an opinion. I've never been calmer, in fact this conversation has proved quite soporific. Playing the self righteous card and assuming so much about me is piss poor debate. Health and happiness to all your relatives, and anybody else's...

"I'm so glad we had this time together"

"Just to have a laugh and sing a song"

"Seems we just get started"

"And before you know it"

"Comes the time we have to say, so long"

p.s. If you want to see something funnier than Chris's lame joke here,
go to the Femdom thread in Ask A Mistress and check out my link

I found something about your toilet habits, but not what you referred to above. Send me the link if you like. I'll read anything funny.
